right I dont want to get flamed but I have noticed a huge influx of people joining over the last few months (i suspect intriqued by the show your monsters thread at KR) and i have noticed that a few have racked up like 200 posts in a month ! the other thing i have noticed is the amount of money being thrown around in BST. The Super 7 RXH set went for 800 this month on the bay and some noobs have told people 'pay over the odds if you have too as long as you get what you want' just wondered what peoples thoughts were (I have been here just under a year and still consider myself a Fresh Meat) but i just wanted peoples opinions on how that whole ' chuck money at it and it will be yours' will affect the hobby in general and do we think that with the mook about to drop and reach a whole new audience RFSO hook up's might stop or just stay within a certain group? thoughts..... |

I know what I want usually goes for. I will not pay very much more than retail for it. Im sure the magority of items on Ebay will rise but Im hoping that the certain group here stays RFSO. With all the original people here, it will be hard for any "NEW' to come in here and jack up prices on items they are selling without getting an ear full or feelings hurt. I am new "obviously" and I do have over 200 posts within, what 2 months now. But that has nothing to do with pricing, I feel anyways. With the Mook coming out, it may draw in more audience, but if Im not mistaken, isnt that what they want to do? |

You seem to have more issues in mind that just the potential effect of the Mook. Playdoh's KR thread has generated some interest, but in terms of traceable "migration," maybe three people total were turned on to kaiju because of that thread who now post here, and so far as I'm aware, they're more interested in Blobpus than RxH. Just from casual observation it seems the KR-based Bwana and Kozik fans account for more "noobs" popping in over here now and then than the "monsters" thread, interestingly enough (if I'm right, that is.) I don't know if Circus Paul's Gargamel collab caused anyone to come over here but I suppose it's possible. Ultimately though, who cares? While I share a lot of the cynicism about the stupidity, immaturity, and corruption at that board, the blame game is sometimes pretty silly and even hypocritical. If the whole point of Super7 magazine was to generate interest and share information against the "man in the tower" effect of withholding information, to borrow Brian's turn of phrase, then why would the site he sponsors be unduly elitist? (Not accusing you donnierobot, just riffing on the issues your post brought up in my mind.) All that aside, it seems almost certain that the Mook will have an effect on interest and valuation, and some RxH collectors will resent this. Interesting times. |

I am not knocking anyone .....people here put up with many a stupid question from me (and still do I was just wondering what people thought what with the silly money for pus and rxh at the moment, i aint a completist (or elitist) i just buy what i like when i can afford it, it just seems prices are going crazy...... |

Cool, and yeah, you're right, they're crazy. I don't see any end in sight, as long as collectors are willing to pay those crazy prices. Seems they aren't always though. I've seen some probably-too-high priced RxH sitting around for a long time in at least one of the better-known flipper's stores. |

I think people have been paying crazy prices for the last couple of years on things, not as bad as it is now with more people all after RxH and things with super low numbers (especially the older stuff), but when Secret Base was more popular some older figures that you can get now for around $100 were going for almost $300 at one point. |

I think you forgot about SDCC, I am sure it has had more to do with generating interest in the toys than anything else. Truthfully the price inflation isn't that unusually aside from the HSP auction. I have no idea what the mook will do to prices of RxH and SB but I think it might have a more inflationary effect on SB than RxH. |

As Count says, there seems to be a shift in the market to the current line of choice (RxH and/or Cronic). Yesterday maybe it was Secret Base. Tomorrow maybe Blobpus or something else. collectors that stay the course with what they really like, as opposed to the fashionable toy will reap the benefits. never saw a Ubiq on ebay before now.....maybe we can score a Ubiq in the future for $150? hell, maybe we can all score a booska in the future for $150. hahahaha |

Pogue wrote: I have no idea what the mook will do to prices of RxH and SB but I think it might have a more inflationary effect on SB than RxH. Interesting. What makes you think so? Is it because you think that the Mook's impact (or anticipated impact) has already been 'priced into' the RxH market, but not into the SB market? If that's it, why that disparity? Or is it something else entirely that leads you to believe this? You do enjoy a unique perspective on this, so I'd very much like to hear your thoughts. Thanks, CC |

I'm not sure what impact the mook will have on the RxH prices beyond what they already are. I would imagine that most people that subscribe to (or purchase) S7 are already aware of the RxH universe and the current price levels. It seems as though the ball is already rolling with respect to 'general' awareness of new JP vinyl. Maybe if nothing else, we'll see more specific 'want' threads, eh? |

pickleloaf wrote: and if you collect dumbass dada figures you always get a deal! Good point. More generally, if you love something that isn't true rare vintage or one of the currently hot big names, you can land treasures without overpaying. I'm loving the Yamanaya Bullmark reissues for that reason. They may not be the original toys per se, but the molds are the same and the newer colorways are often beautiful. |

I never got chance to check out the Mook proofs . . . has SB got a decent feature in there? I'm one of the guys that paid outta his ass for a few pieces over the last year or so and am liking the shift of interest into other areas . . . Older sub $100 SB rocks my world! |

(BTW -Talking like this about toys on a bbs makes me feel stupid). akum6n wrote: I'm not sure what impact the mook will have on the RxH prices beyond what they already are. I think for better or worse, not only is the mook is gonna drive up prices on everything contained, it will attract many more collectors to Japanese vinyl. barbarians at the gate!!! |

I agree, i live for rxh, and no shit about the information the mook will give.. I guess my thought is this. What good is it to know about the older 'rare' pieces if there are only a set number available (and most in collectors' hands already)? You can wish for a GID Head all you want, but that won't make it appear on YJA; moreover, the people that will throw down stupid money for something like that will do so irregardless of whether they can read about it in a book or not. Maybe I am wrong; I'm just speculating based on other collecting trends that I've seen. It seems like increased information is more the result, rather than the cause, of price inflation. I guess, thinking about it a bit more, a risk that I see is that people will be willing to pay more money for older/rarer pieces once they realize exactly how 'rare' they are. I wonder if we will see an overall rise in demand, or just peaks in the prices of certain pieces. |

akum6n, I was only commenting on the last part of your quote. The Mook has a much larger audience than the existing community of RxH collectors/observers. I really have no idea about the price, I can't imagine people paying more than they are now but I said that 8 months ago. |

I don't know specifically what venues the mook will be distributed to, but I'm assuming it will be more widely available than just via subscription or at the S7 store ... is that right? If so, and it makes its way to Urban Outfitters, Borders, KR, or what-have-you, then yes, people will be awed by the RxH section and will want a piece of the action. That's my assumption/prediction anyway. |
