Sweet! I gotta check to see if they're hitting West Coast/Portland...
Great album! I dig the new "Rainbow" album too.

Listening to "Akuma No Kuma" right now (from "Altar"). What a great song (and album) for stewing in a rotten mood.

IMO "Altar" = most overrated record ever made. Sorry, but Sunn is just gay.

I kinda agree with half of what you said. I haven't heard a Sunn album that I've liked. But I really dig "Altar" - Boris makes Sunn very listenable!

(Now listening to Earth 2.)

So O'Malley and Mr. Southernlord are posers?

Everybody's entitled to their opinion. And I'm just askin'...

I do like certain Sunn O))) songs. I also Dark Ambient, which some of Sunn reminds me of.

Not posers in general, but with Sunn...well, here's a few points:

1. They wear robes and rely on schtick (nobody gave a fuck when it was 3 longhairs in jeans and t-shirts)
2. They do things like hold their fists/guitars/etc up in the air with the ultimate dramatic stance (ie POSING)
3. Every single aspect of the band is stolen (artwork, titles, the psuedonyms they used to go under, etc). I mean, how long can you ride off of EARTH 2? Dylan Carlson got over it, why can't they? Oh yeah - cuz 15 year old kids buy merch with their parent's money.

Three strikes and you're out. It doesn't mean I don't like either of those guys...they're both pretty cool.

I thought Altar was over-rated too. I much prefer the Merzbow/Boris collab released last year.

They played here for SXSW and oddly they were introduced by the local weather man who MC'ed the line up but clearly had no clue. With the amount of giant banners you would think Boris had a Mountain Dew connection. Great show but it was mostly the Pink album stuff.

Im glad they will be here Wednesday again though, if they get to your area go see em, if just for the drummer, he seems to be the happiest guy alive when he is on stage.

slightly unrelated - I wish every city had an Emo's.

In the '90s, admission was FREE for adults (under 21 had to pay).

Don't know if it is still that way, but I lived there from the summer of '92 until the beginning of 1994. So many shows...

I'm with Khanate - I saw Sunn in a tiny club here about two years ago and I was thoroughly underwhelmed. I was expecting some intense drone/feedback stuff, but it was basically sludgy bad metal. My comment at the time was that they should either play a lot more chords or a few less (i.e. one). Plus the robe thing was just goofy.

Alright then, it's agreed - I listen to overrated poser music.
But in my defense, the album is UNrated to me, as I don't know anyone that listens to this stuff and I don't read any music magazines/reviews. I walked into it having heard nothing about it other than having previously listened to bits of Sunn and Boris at the record store.
I still find the middle two songs hauntingly beautiful. But I can see how wearing robes at the shows is contrived.

I like the robes. I am sorry, I suck. Please throw things at me.

*throws a few REAL drone CDs at Chad* haha...to each his own!

What can I say - I'm a bit of a purist. I guess I just don't have time for anything other than totally original music these days, and consider an artists image more hurtful than helpful.
