I am a huge CANON fan - http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ProductCatIndexAct&fcategoryid=173 For under $500 look at the bottom 3 under the title - Single Chip CCD Digital Camcorders They are $250 - $300 Great cams... avoid cams that record straight to DVD as it really limits your editing capabilities... |

Thanks, jawk! Really helpful... Good to hear info about the direct-to-disc; he will be editing whatever he shoots on a pc (he's dyin' for a Mac...some time next year!)... |

Canons are nice and Sony has always made ones with very good picture quality. Make sure you stick with MiniDV tape ones and not the Hard Disk based-ones...they're way too fragile. If your son is creative then try to get one with as many manual features as possible so he can experiment... |
