best cover.. thats a tough one. I'll have to look at home.
One of the best would have to be the only rolling stones album I have:

Image

great hologram cover with all the Beatles hidden in it.

And that Feederz one with the sandpaper on the cover is kinda great
Image
such an abrasive album it destroys all albums around it.

Ziggy brings back probably my first conscious musical memory:

One afternoon my mom had the album on (and I was probably 5 or 6) and I was looking at the back cover (Zig is hanging out in a phone booth) and I asked my mom if it was a man or a woman...and she just smiled at me and said, "It's just Bowie."

I was hooked from that point on.

Nice. ;)

Do a youtube search for her. Not only did she have fantastic album covers, she actually had some great songs in the 70's.

Oh damn...I did a search and the first video I clicked on was her appearance on Soul Train with Don and his afro. I thought I was a kid again...lol...and Japanese subtitles to boot :)

COOL! I just saw that one too. Ah, childhood memories. I remember when Soul Train would air on Saturday mornings when I was young. It meant that cartoons were over.

Some of my favorite LP covers really don't look great shrunk down to CD size or in photographs, especially those with gatefold sleeves or novelty covers like the original version of Talking Heads' "Fear of Music," which actually had the relief of a manhole cover's pattern. Still, I'm gonna offer this one up because I love the fact that Mr. Bowie, who almost invariably has photos taken after having been lavishly "done up" in a stylish manner with makeup, styling, and clothes, in this case went out of his way to look like a beat-up mess. It was perfect for the zeitgeist of the time. The bottom "postcard" half of the image was the album's "front." The gatefold opened to reveal the full image.

I love that someone posted Roxy's "Country Life." All of their early covers were great, as were the inner gatefolds.

Hah! PK beat me to the Whipped Cream. Well for good measure, here's another unforgettable classic:

And a personal fave from my high school days. Art by Gary Panter. Music was by Chrome, Tuxedomoon, MX-80 Sound, and The Residents.
