Reznor follows Radiohead... BTW, does anyone use FLAC files? ------ Convinced the current music business infrastructure (requiring artists to rely on labels) is broken, Nine Inch Nails front man, Trent Reznor, released his band’s new album Sunday night via his official site, marking yet another business experiment for this artist in the changing music market. Last year, Reznor announced his band would free itself from record labels, and it looks like he’s following through with his promise. He released the new album, Ghosts I - IV (Ghosts Volumes One though Four), Sunday at 6 PM, says the LA Times’ Extended Play blog. The musician’s experiment relies on the theory that customers would be willing to pay for the music if there’s extra value included, so he released the album in various packages. The first 9 tracks are available for free in a high-quality, DRM-free MP3 format, and a 40 page PDF book and a digital extras pack with wallpapers, icons, and more come included. Everything in the free package is included in the 5$ set, but the rest of the album gets thrown in, and it’s available in a variety of DRM-free formats including 320 kbps MP3, FLAC Lossless, and Apple Lossless. http://ghosts.nin.com/main/order_options |

i tried to download it this morning at work but the download completed incomplete...only made it to like 1mb or so...sites obviously getting hammered. The ultimate deluxe edition is awfully tempting but I think the 2x CD set will suffice. |

liquidsky wrote: BTW, does anyone use FLAC files? Yeah, a lot of people I trade live music files with all use FLAC. It does not lose any quality during compression and I can hear a difference. So what does everyone think of the album so far? I'm going to try and d/l it today. |

I ended up dl'ing the whole shabang... really great end to end. it almost works like a opus or a large peice of work divided into chapters, as it flows very fluently form track to track and disc to disc. I love how it starts off slow like a great classical piece of music, then by disc 2 or 3 is moving faster and giving some attitude, disc 3 and four take some unexpected but great turns.. overall I love this and maybe my fav nin project since.....? Im really thinking of getting the LP set. |

how is the album lyrically? i used to be a huge NIN fan when i was younger. it spoke to me more then i guess. but after some maturing and life experience, some of the lyrics started to sound really bad... like trent was a 15 year old poet writing in a spiral book. (downward spiral book? i am sure it came down to tastes changing as well, but the music itself lost it's luster as more NIN stuff was released so anyway, how does this stack up now? |

Bleh, missed the ultra-delux. The printing work redefines "thoughtful" design. It's a thing of beauty! |
