Hey Everyone! Happy May Day! May 1st is called Labor Day to some people. What that means is take the day to reflect how work can break the human spirit. Unions were formed in the early 1900's by people who were sick and tired of being fucked over by their employers and forced to work long days with little pay and no benefits. The I.W.W. or "Wobblies," were born. In celebration, I will not be going to work today. Think about the I.L.W.U. in Long Beach who will be shutting down the ports not allowing ANY goods to go in or out. Stick that up your ass, world economy! This all in opposition to that lovely desert Vietnam of the 21st century. Body counts every day and so monotonous that the news doesn't even report them anymore. Soldiers die and disappear blurring into obscurity, leaving only a mourning family with unanswered questions. So call out sick today. Go downtown and support the immigrant movement who will be marching from Broadway/Olympic to MacArthur Park. (Let's hope there are no more repeats of last year. Yuck) So, Call in sick, smoke a bowl if thats your bag, and join your fellow man in the streets. |

I don't have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It's a depression. Everybody's out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel's work, banks are going bust, shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter. Punks are running wild in the street and there's nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there's no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat, and we sit watching our TV's while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that's the way it's supposed to be. We know things are bad - worse than bad. They're crazy. It's like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don't go out anymore. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we are living in is getting smaller, and all we say is, 'Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-belted radials and I won't say anything. Just leave us alone.' Well, I'm not gonna leave you alone. I want you to get mad! I don't want you to protest. I don't want you to riot - I don't want you to write to your congressman because I wouldn't know what to tell you to write. I don't know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crime in the street. All I know is that first you've got to get mad. You've got to say, 'I'm a HUMAN BEING, Goddamnit! My life has VALUE!' |

My boss is a bastard. But, I'd rather work and get paid than stay home and not... |

Yeah, I'm pretty fortunate in that my company's president and all of its managers are really decent, honest people. |

I'll give you a cowriting credit, of course. |

I don't know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crime in the street. "the Russians"? Things in general worldwide may be dire (same as it ever was) ... and Putin does seem a bit like Central Casting's generic KGB villain in one of the turgid 80's Bond films, but did you have in mind some particular issue with Russians and the current crises? |
