Just curious to see what people think... if you saw it and liked it/didn't like it, were you a fan of the original series?

I just saw the first 7 minutes of the film online, and it looks fun.

Been hearing it really sucks.
I'd go watch just for fun.

I've not seen it yet, but i've been impressed with how 'anime-ish' the previews have looked.

I was never a huge Speed Racer fan, but I might check this out this weekend.

Well, the reviews I've read kinda say that the film is pretty narrowly focused on fanboy geeks... since there is a higher percentage of fanboy geeks on this board, I thought I'd see if this bore out.

they were talking about it on NPR today and I have to say the movie parts didn't sound too exciting. However when they were talking about the Anime that was interesting. Mach Go!Go!Go! is a much better name than Speed Racer.

the trailers on television are a blurry flash of color...I'm not sure that I could sit through a whole 1.5-2 hour version of it...

The trailers are already ruining my childhood memories a la Underdog.

It's like watching someone playing a video game. I'll pass.

Went to go see Speed Racer tonight. Gotta admit...it was pretty fun. The Wachowskis went a little crazy with the "wire work", but this time i was with cars, not people. Very stylized and cartoony (not Roger Rabbit-ish, though), which I dug. It seems like the only way to do it. Alot of little things were pretty true to the anime, in terms of how they filmed it. Plus, the Mach 5 gets alot of face time (I thought it'd be all Mach 6).

Overall I really enjoyed it. I didn't feel like I got Matrix Revolutions redemption from the Wachowskis but they did give me confidence that they're still capable directors and writers. I saw it in Imax and during the high speed races, I gave up on trying to understand what was going on and just tripped out on the pretty colors. Fans of the show will have a great time but I don't know if I can make that promise to anyone that's not. The end credits are all Chim Chim and they are hysterical. Great score from Michael Giacchino of Lost and Incredibles fame.

I'm a FanBoy Geek and I thought the flick was something that came out the north end of a south bound dog.

I think they should have just did it in full CG like The Incredibles, Montster Inc or some Pixar-ish animation.

Save your cash and just go see Iron Man!!

The previews are deceiving from what the film actually looks like. Its much easier on the eyes than it appears, the first race scene is a bit too cartoony with crazy spin outs and over use of fancy screen pan outs but they chill out after the first 30 minutes and becomes pretty enjoyable. Everyone that actually saw it in the theatre liked it leaving, which is more than I can say for cloverfield which everyone on here enjoyed.

I felt the same way. I guess it was a flop, so all those Mach 5 toys will be super cheap soon. I liked the movie a lot, I watched the cartoon religiously as a kid too...so the nostalgia factor weighs in.
