"DARWIN, Australia(AP) An Australian man has been fined after buckling in a case of beer with a seat belt but leaving a 5-year-old child to sit on the car's floor, police said Tuesday. Constable Wayne Burnett said he was "shocked and appalled" when he pulled over the unregistered car Friday in the central Australian town of Alice Springs. The 30-can beer case was strapped in between two adults sitting in the back seat of the car. The child was also in back, but on the car's floor. "The child was sitting in the lump in the center, unrestrained," Burnett told reporters Tuesday. "I haven't ever seen something like this before," he said. "This is the first time that the beer has taken priority over a child." The driver was fined 750 Australian dollars _ about $710 _ for driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle and for failing to ensure a child was wearing a safety belt." He got off easy with just a fine. I hope the miss lets him have it too. |

Ha! Sometimes i have to strap my beer in. If i put it in my passanger seat, I have an annoying ring that wont stop until you buckle the seat belt Obviously if I had a kid, I'd make sure that they were securely fastened...to the roof. |

Two adults in the back seat and neither of them could be trusted to hold the beer on their lap until the ride was over... I keep thinking of some Aussie redneck Jeff Foxworthy routine, "You know yer a dingo's arse if ya..." (or whatever slang would be appropriate)... I have also buckled beer in the car...and guitars...but I don't have children and don't particularly care to travel with them anyway...If I was that cop, I would have also confiscated their beer in addition to the (lenient) fine. |

It's funny but incredibly sad in a way. I wonder what kind of beer it was anyway. |
