I just want to say- packing (not just toys- did that last night) and gathering all your crap out of a apartment really really sucks. Not only did I help my room mate load a truck and attach his car to a towing ramp monday but now I have to finish packing after work the next two nights myself. How did I end up with all this stuff? I came to Buffalo with a backseat/trunk full of things. Forecast for the big move friday afternoon- hot and humid! Great, I already told my g/f I love her but we'll probably break up 4 times that day (moving couches and box springs through narrow stairwells in the heat will do that!). At least this is my last move in Buffalo, before next years big move back to civilization.

I hear ya. Know what else is fun? Unpacking everything that you just put in boxes... Oh well, it will be nice to eat with cutlery that is not plastic.

I actually don't mind unpacking and sorting stuff out in a new place. Maybe it's the organizer in me and unpacking has a positive end result. Packing /Moving disturbs my inner neat freak, not to mention bringing out the rage factor. I have to trek to Canada sometime in July to get a giant expedit shelf unit for all my records. I think I need to prune those down as lugging 15- 75 pound boxes up flights of steps really is not fun.

I hear you. I moved to Japan 4 years ago with two suitcases and last time I moved we needed a small truck.

But that's one reason I like 7"s better than 12"s...waaaaaaay lighter and easier to pack!

I hate moving, which is why i bought a house. Only problem with that was, when you own a house, you start filling it up with crap. Now I'm really dreading a move anywhere. I'm going to have to sell some of this stuff or throw it away.

It really doesnt help that I have serious pack-ratting issues.

Although it's weird. I personally hate moving, but I dont mind helping other people move that much. Guess I hate putting shit in/out of boxes.

Great way to get exercise.

I needed to move 150 boxes of books down three flights of stairs, across town and up two flights in mid summer.
Besides all of the other stuff.

So I had to hire movers and even they were reduced to tears and I had to help out to keep things going.
It was brutal.

Of course I underestimated the amount of space and its been tight living since the move.

I'm kinda a pack rat too....If I could ever find a place where A) I could see myself living a long time B) Had a vibrant cultural scene (kaiju shops are pretty rare right?, music, art, etc etc) C) Was affordable and at the same time had a decent job market and finally: D) Had the right environment - ocean, mountains, geographical features, history etc I'd look into owning a home there. 39 years of not liking where I am is getting to me- NJ, Philadelphia, NYC, Buffalo. I've always wanted to live abroad, west coast (Northern Cali) or basically own a kool aid stand on a tropical island in the south pacific and live out my days in poverty. My g/f doesn't want to move out west or on a island :P

Holy fucking shit! 150 boxes of books????! Wow and I thought my 5 boxes of books was going to be tough (with records etc). You definitely get the 'tough move' award and in mid summer no less! I never hire movers- I love the exercise and the inevitable collapse after it's all over.

Looking back maybe it was 110 boxes but it was still too many.
That's why I broke down and paid for movers.
I'd done it before in the past and hated it.
Lost 15 pounds during that last move.

Owning has turned out OK for me, it'd definitely helped me on my taxes. The only problem with it is that I'm looking at moving next year, and selling the house is probably going to be a pain in the ass. The only thing that helps me is that property is at a premium in lexington and these builders dont have the land to pop up subdivisions whenever they feel like it.

Also..150 boxes of books? That's insane. I quit buying books due to moving them being a pain in the ass.

My next move is going to be cross country, so I'm going to have to do something with a lot of this crap I've got.

I have always thought the worst thing about moving was "the last little bit" those things you don't pack until the final minutes... and then you realise that there are tons more than you thought, taking you far longer than intended, and always in boxes that are labeled "stuff" so you lose them forever and dig through 30 odd boxes till you find them again.

Agreed. Big stuff is so rewarding to move, cause when you move a couch it clears out like 10% of a room. It's the little odds and ends that take forever to get together.

Then you have to clean :|

+2 on this! Little odds and ends are the worse. Things you keep thinking "Do I need this or should I throw it away?" you always throw away things you should have saved and keep things you don't need! My landlord has been pretty cool since we gave him only 30 days notice (because of my roomate) and I even think he thought we were staying up until monday (we did tell him we were looking elsewhere), so I'm being honorable by cleaning the kitchen floor and bathroom today before work (now- it's sucks as I gotta leave in an hour). I could strangle my ex roomate for basically setting this entire event in motion and bolting without even sweeping before he left. I'm glad it will now just be me an the woman because we stay on top of cleaning all the time.

My gf and I have moved 5 times in the last 4 years and I've noticed one consistent thing: None of our (longtime) friends are available to help. Fucking bastards. Can't wait until one of them gets arrested in Mexico.

Conqueror, your new avatar is tight. What's it from?

I've pretty much found the exact neighborhood I want to buy a house in, but property in Tokyo ain't exactly on the cheap side, if you know what I mean. And with the ridiculously low rent on our place now, I'm just hoping the landlady (who is seriously the nicest landlady on Earth) doesn't raise the rent too much when we renew the lease next year...

I just moved a couple of months ago...
It wasn't as painful as other moves due to the fact that I moved next store.

I live in a 3 story Victorian house (built in 1901) that is spilt into 3 apartments. I lived in Apt # 2 (which was an awesome apartment) and # 3 became available so I jumped on it. It's twice as big with a lot of cool features.

It was a pretty easy move. I didn't have to carry anything up/down any stairs. All the upstairs stuff was moved to the upstairs, same with the downstairs stuff. I moved everything by myself on a Friday afternoon minus the sofa and a big screen TV....and I have alot of stuff.

I did get rid of some stuff that I couldn't believe that I still had.

Now instead of having one room for my toys I have two (one is a Star Wars room)!
