So I was watching the season finale of the Shield last night and during commercials, up came Star Trek (2009) and The Day the Earth Stood Still with Keanu Reeves. WTF? Anyone heard anything about these? |

Anyone heard anything about these? I did from people I work with. That conversation went like this - "Duuude, you see that new movie with Keanu Reeves comin' out? That's NUTS!" - "What is it?" - "It's about aliens and some crazy cloud, it's called 'The Day Earth Stood Still' or something" - "Oh I didn't know they remade it." - "No, it's new." - ::brain shuts down for self preservation:: |

Heh, old news! I think Star Trek will be alright, I'm not a Trek fan so I feel no pain saying that. It appeals to me far more than watching another Next Gen Trek movie. Btw, Australia the movie is long and fairly sucky. |

An even bigger WTF - they're remaking Peckinpah's "Straw Dogs". In the name of god, why? |

I won't watch the "new" The day the earth stood still, so it doesn't exist to me. Sucky thing is that I wrote a song about "The Day the earth stood still", I guess I have to can it, or everyone will think its about the shitty remake which is a brand new story to everyone with no taste in movies! |

You know, that new Star Trek trailer... The thing is that outside of the guy playing Spock, everyone else seems like central casting pretty boys who could be on a WB drama. And all of that macho posturing Kirk does seems a bit shallower than the arrogant—but ultimately thoughtful—Kirk of the original series. And generally I've grown sick of J.J. Abrams storytelling where everything is a red herring or MacGuffin of some other piece of B.S. He's just too smug and humorless in the way he presents things. Will say, hearing the original Trek's red alert klaxon while a huge battle is raging was pretty cool. So there might be some hope, but this trailer is clearly like "Star Trek: Gone in 60 Seconds" and that better not be the whole film. |

The Day The Keanu Stood Still looks way sucky. Star Trek looks really good. I'm playing catch-up with The Shield. About halfway through Season Five now. I see what the hoopla is about. Great series. |

This is probably heresy, but I never liked the original version of The Day The Earth Stood Still that much. I also thought the 70s version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers was far superior to the original, too, though. Star Trek. Man, that's near and dear to my heart, and I just can't visualize any of those guys playing the roles, especially Simon Pegg and Harold (forget his name) because I've never seen them do anything but comedy. The design is all wrong, too, aside from the shape of the ship and the sliding doors I see no continuity with other Star Trek material. Also, I read that time-traveling Romulans are involved. Big suck. Dean, The Shield season finale was the other night and it is very satisfying, so you are on a worthwhile journey. I couldn't say the same if you were watching The Sopranos. ;p |

Didn't they start showing teasers of the new Star Trek film about a year ago? It was so long ago, when I saw the trailer last weekend I thought to myself "This movie hasn't come out yet? WTF?". Seriously, though, aren't they beginning the buzz campaigns for these films waaaaay too early? I was pretty interested when I saw that teaser way back when, but so much time has passed, I just don't care anymore. |

The main trailer came out last week and it looks good. Feels very much like the new Battlestar Galactica... and Silus from Heroes is Captain Kirk |

Amazing show that does not get enough press. I thought the Shield was amazingly good stuff. Great ending though some stuff wasn't resolved. Great lines like "I'll send you a postcard from space mountain". Heard great things about the Wire and gotta rent that as I don't have HBO. |

First, 'remake' and 'Peckinpah' cannot be used in the same sentence. The sardonic irony is the fact Hollywood douche-nozzles green lit a Peckinpah 'remake'. Peckinpah seethed hatred of all things Hollywood--he did it his way. If the studio did not like it, he said 'F.O.' and did it anyway. This is the very thing that will NOT happen in a modern-day picture (e.g., the creepy rape scene). |

Guys, to save Dean and others from being spoiled, and because I love this show, I'm splitting The Shield discussion into a different topic. Regarding Day The Earth Blah Blah, is Gort now 30 feet tall? He looks like it in the trailer but I couldn't tell whether it was a stylistic thing or not. |

Whether it was because he hated Hollywood or he just had his own vision is up for debate, but the fact remains that his work is his, and not up for revision. It would be like attempting to "remake" one of Cassavetes' films; impossible. There is no way that film could be matched, much less improved. |

I actually think both of these look pretty good. I'm not a Star Trek fan at all, but this new movie looks like the most action packed, exciting ST movie ever. For once I'm interested. Meanwhile I know that's what has a lot of die hard fans pissed off. I am a big Day the Earth Stood Still fan, but I think it looks like they changed some things and played around with it, but it still seems like it could be decent. What I'm not really sure about is the upcoming Friday the 13th remake or My Bloody Valentine 3-D (not making this up), although I'll see both I'm sure, and I'm actually kind of into that they made a 3-D horror film of any kind in 2008. |
