Anyone with the fishtank ever decorate it with vinyl? Or will vinyl just murder my fish?

I recently was given a nice 55 gallon fish tank. I'm getting it going and I want to decorate it with a bit of a Monster feel- initally I was hoping to find a ceramic/resin/whatever Godzilla Aquarium decoration for the bottom... I figured there had to be something like this out there- Godzilla is on all sort of merchandise; but surprisingly there seems to be no such thing. I searched online with no luck. So my next thought was just putting a vinyl figure in there- sinking it with some marbles or something and just having a Kaiju Toy down there- Maybe Tripasu, or something... =)

Just wondering if there were any Aquarium people on the board who might be a bit more knowledgeable about vinyl as decoration in a fish tank and could help me out. Or if anyone knows where I could score some Kaiju Aquarium decorations (maybe an aquarium store in Japan?) and could help me out?

thanks,

Phil

Can't really help you with any of this - but considering the fishing lures posted a month ago I am convinced that there have to be Kaiju aquarium decorations somewhere out there, too... :)

I would be wary of putting vinyl in a live aquarium, and check toxicity issues. Is the vinyl slowly disolving into the water? What about the paint?

Regardless of what the vinyl does toxicity wise, understand that stuff put in aquariums can get real dirty, real fast. I wouldn't put anything in there that you would care if it was permanently mucked up a bit.

Wouldn't do it. Water is constantly moving in an aquarium. #1 The vinyl color will fade with the water and the UV light, the vinyl will also cloud up. #2 What the water takes out of the toy will be in the water. I've seen aquarium decos of Dragons I'll see if i can dig up some info on that.

If you can't put vinyl into the tank, just get this guy. "Pseudoscaphirhynchus sp dwarf sturgeon"

You might need a bigger tank, he grows up to 2 ft.

Your safest strategy is to only put things in the fish tank that were designed to be put in a fish tank.

I used to have one of these:

Well I know if I did put a piece of Vinyl in the tank it would be as good as trashed, I was just wondering about the relative safety of the fish and all. And obviously I'd much rather have something made specifically for a fish tank- which brings me back around to how surprised I am that I couldn't find Kaiju Aquarium decoration...

Vinyl is not even safe for people. Please don't put it near defenseless fish.

I was responding with the fishes' welfare in mind.

yah, you ever put some water in a recycled plastic bottle and notice how if you leave it for a while it tastes kinda nasty?
Imagine what a vinyl figure could do to a tank with all the paints and stuff as well to think about. I would stick with stuff
thats meant to go in a tank. Maybe you could put a vinyl set up behind the tank, that might be cool..

I'm quite positive the vinyl would be toxic to the fish. Notice they sell alot of things just to stabilize water in most aquariums? Now notice that smell when you open a kaiju package? Thats what the fish would be taking in 24-7.
