Post subject:  iPhoto & External Drive: Help?

Hey folks - can anyone help me figure out how to point iPhoto to my external hard drive? I just shuttled all our music and photos over to it and had no problem pointing iTunes to it. But I can't figure out how to point iPhoto to it.
Thanks!

Try this http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=273178

But keep a copy of the original library somewhere safe just in case!

Awesome! It worked! I just figured that it would be the same as iTunes since they're both "i" software, and was stymied when I couldn't figure it out.
Thanks!

Definitely keep another copy safe. something happened to my library when i linked it to an external drive & one day i opened iPhoto and everything was invisible. The photos weren't "gone" but they wouldn't show up in the program. I took it to the mac store and they looked at it with me for an hour and still nothing- I just had to start fresh and keep all the old photos off of the program.

Just for iPhoto? Or iTunes too? Right now all the music is on the external drive and nothing is on the computer - this is the whole reason we bought the external drive, so we could take files off the computer. But I sure would hate it if we lost all our music.

Just wondering why you want to keep everything off the mac?
You could leave all your files on the internal HD, keep backups on the external, keeping it somewhere safe and then if the mac dies or gets stolen :( you're backed up...

I'm paranoid and have various external drives for backing up to - I'd hate to loose a lifetime of family (and toy!) photos and music!

It just seemed to be acting slow. I thought it would act better if we got all those files moved off.

mmm - I guess it depends on your mac spec and how much space you'd filled/had left
Have you noticed a difference now you've moved your files?

I wish I could back up my iTunes library, but 800GB..just too big to backup. I just run TechTool checks on the external hard drive every couple of weeks.

Kinda, maybe? Things seem to open quicker I suppose. But it appears the main problem is with the DVD drive - it really freezes everything up when we try to copy a CD to the drive, makes a chugging sound and if you try to open another program you're done for. Sucks.
