Post subject:  NON-Detolf glass cases

Sorry, I'm really a huge hater of detolfs... But I'm trying to look into other types of glass enclosures - no industrial/retail type cases need apply here though. I couldn't stand to have retail store display cases in my living room or anything.. :? I know I'm picky, but who isn't? :P

I found a link to some nice ones in Japan, but they still aren't quite right for the dimensions I'm looking into, and I think I'll probably have to end up building something from scratch, but it's always worth a shot to look into whatever mediums already exist.
Here's the link: http://homepage2.nifty.com/noda-ya/hobby/daikan.htm
The cases there look nice, but the sliding doors at the front (which are way better than sliding doors at the rear, like retail cases) still give me that non-home-furnishing feel. If anyone else has built glass cases, or has some that are different from the Detolf towers, I'd love to see a picture of it.

I'm not really close to executing the buy/build yet, but I am trying to see as many ideas as possible while sketching out my plans and going any further.

No one has any ideas?
I was considering simply DIYing a shelving setup in a corner, and going probably from about 18-20" off the floor up to about 72-80" high. I'm still trying to find which type of brackets would work best, but I'd be getting glass cut instead of wood, and probably have it go between 48-60" long and 15-18" wide for each shelf.

Only thing I haven't yet been able to find is a bracket or hook for the front side and open far end (to affix to the top and bottom shelves) so that I could also have sections of glass cover the front and end. I could just have 2 evenly cut pieces, kinda like doors (but removable instead of hinged), to cover the front, and another piece to permanently affix to the ends. This way, it would appear as a floating case instead of shelves, I wont have any of the metal framing the whole thing out, and it'll cut down on my dusting big time

If anyone has any other depictions or experience in making LARGER glass shelving systems or cases, I'd love to get more input. I really have no interest in utilizing smaller cases/shelves and lining them up side by side, or spreading them through the house.

I got mine from a TRU manager when they were remodeling. They are worth at least $1500-$2000 ea. I had to have a lock smith make new locks and keys since the store kept the originals and they couldn't be duplicated. That was a little pricey. Also, I had to wire a new cord onto one of the 5 I had, because they had damaged the wire/plug.

I just sold one not to long ago for $1,500. I am looking to sell 1-2 more possibly.

thanks joe. vintage yes. mib no. only have new charactics one [MIB!!!] standing next to it.

@ ooze-it: got them for 400 $ each, not too bad as new ones are probably ~ 2.700 $ over here, but have same problem, one key is missing - hoping to get "masterkey" to open it.

Man, those are some beautiful cases.

I've had detolfs since I started collecting, but kind of wish I had different displays. I would love to have a long shelf where toys could be displayed more horizontally.

My only real gripe about detolfs (aside from the fact that I started buying them before the black version was available), is that they have so much wasted space in each segment. Toys that are 12" are still about 3" from the next shelf.

Edit:

If I were to go back in time, I'd probably get something like this -- 70" long with LED lights:

I think that's a fancy humidifier.

I thought it was a chic garbage-can.
and banshee: those cases also look like what the prizes are kept safe in when you go to the ticket-redeeming center at an arcade/kids place (to me). This is the trouble I'm having, is that most cases that are on the market are now tall and skinny (like detolfs, too skinny for me to care for, even if I could get over their looks) or the longer ones are like those of a jewelery store. They definitely wouldn't mesh with the interior of a living space, and I'm far too picky to let something that big and focal slide

This is an older picture but this is what I'm currently using. I got it from my moms house when I was visiting last year. It works for the moment since I have a small collection (30+ figs), it could easily hold 12-15 more. I wish I could find something similar but slightly taller(I'm also not a fan of detolfs or the store display look), but for now it does the job and it keeps dust, the dog and my kids out.

soooooooo....
exactly why do you hate detoifs.
i mean, it's just basically glass, shelf space for toys, and it's not very space consuming...
i don't know, they have worked for me.
i do want the branch to something that can consume all of the collection in one swoop.
i'm sorry, but i can't see the reasoning behind "hate" here,
and a shelving unit is really the last of my worries (when it comes to that strict of a mindset).

I'm going to chime in with my HATE of the Detolf! They let a shitload of dust in from the cracks in the door part. I fucking HATE dust.
Also they are fairly small. And that is why I HATE them!!
I have three and can't wait to smash them once I get something better!
