"Universal and Imagine Entertainment are gearing up for "The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft." The studio has bought the film rights to Image Comics’ graphic novel, with the project a potential directing vehicle for Ron Howard."

i read a while back that guillermo del toro (pan's labyrinth, hellboy) had a script ready for at the mountains of madness, but no studio wanted to jump aboard :(

if anyone can pull out a great film adaption of one of lovecrafts tales it would be del toro and at the mountains.

maybe if this film does good, at the mountains will get some love

Agreed Lalo. Del Toro's the best I can think of for "getting it right." That critter at the end of the first Hellboy was soooo Cthulhu. More importantly he could get the balance between story, atmosphere, and scary scary stuff right. Lovecraft's a hard nut to crack, I think. The language is hyperbolic and antiquated, and what horror there is in his work ... it's sort of like old radio dramas ... the best parts are in your head, prompted by the writer. At least Del Toro is currently working on The Hobbit, for which he's also perfect, especially with the LOTR creative trio in the producers' chair.

Ron Howard, big question mark. I'm not a big fan of his although IMHO "Frost/Nixon" was pretty much flawless. That's such a different beast, though. I don't know the graphic novel that this project is based on but I'm going to track it down. What I've read of the basic plot sounds like it might make for a better movie than an attempt to translate an actual Lovecraft story to the screen medium.

I had heard the del Toro rumor as well and hope it becomes a reality. He does such a good job creating highly detailed and 'believable' alternate realities that he would be perfect. With the Strange Adventures... movie, chances are the movie studios are pushing this through not because of Lovecraft, but because it's a 'graphic novel' and those movies seem to do well at the box office. (I have not read the comic, but I hope it does not turn the author into a character.)

They're gonna save him for the sequel. He's definitely got that "Innsmouth Look".


And I know this has absolutely nothing to do with Ron Howard's current career as a director, but how cool would it be to actually have a Lovecraft story set in Mayberry? Like Andie goes to investigate some bootleggers living out in the woods outside of town, and it turns out they are actually a cult dedicated to opening the gate allowing Shub-Niggurath to enter our world and the bootlegging operation is only supporting their dark ambition. You could even throw in some subtext about Lovecraft's racism by having the bootleggers all be Mexian or Irish or something. (if they were Irish you could totally pull something out of Arthur Machen's stuff in there too!
