I was just watching a movie the other night on the history channel called "Fooling Hitler" which described the allies using this technique effectively in WWII including D-Day!

They basically filled the African deserts with fake tanks and mirrors to fool the nazis.
Really cool stuff.
Channel 4 did a documentary on it ages ago.
