Oblivion

another jaw-dropper from Mastodon and one of my favorite cuts on the album. They should be at the end of their tour and hopefully some of y'all got a chance to see them this time around! What was a surprise was them playing the entire album non-stop then firing up some of the "greatest" hits. How they managed to maintain that level for an hour and 1/2 (or more) was beyond me :D

I've seen them twice, last two years around my birthday, such a great show...

Saw them a couple of months ago and was blown away by the show - absolutely killed that they played the entire album from start to finish! And I was amazed by how well they were able to recreate it live. After watching them play all the songs I have a whole new appreciation for the new album.
And then it seemed like they played half the songs from Blood Mountain, Leviathan and Remission.

exactly :D

when they played here in NYC / Brooklyn, the joint was small - around 200 people fit in, if that. plus it was a slightly "older" crowd so no goons were flailing around or kicking up their legs and everyone was able to really soak up the music - I was able to really enjoy their musicianship. I swear it's gotten better in the last year!

I really like that they have broken away from the lead guitar/rhythm guitar/lead vox/back-up vox template that most bands use. The way the vocals are shared among three of them, and the two guitarists share the lead/rhythm duties from song to song, or even within a single song. It makes for very diverse and layered song-writing.

That guy's going to regret the tattoo on his face when he gets older ...except he attacked someone and chose a towel as his weapon then got punched into a coma so assuming he continues his hijinks he probably won't see 40.

Good band though. Its hard to believe they haven't heard of the group "Crack The Sky" since its the kind of music they list as highly influential.

Maybe its really about a dead sister but still "Crack The Sky" kicked so much ass you'd think they'd give them credit after borrowing the name for an album title. Cool video as well.

Sorry, gonna have to disagree and say that this tune is a big disappointment. If this track defines the flow of the entire album I'm calling major dud and corp sell-out all the way. Gonna have to say derivative

Derivative of what specifically? Not saying its not derivative but the melody and chord structure didn't remind me of anything in particular except them.

Crack The Sky is so obscure maybe its a coincidence on the name thing but I suspect they've heard them.

Honestly, the first thought that came to mind was that awful band Evanescence (yes, I said it) and the overall predictability of the track. That feeble attempt to try to rock out, but still have some sort of mellow sellable hook or pop aesthetic to make it palatable to the masses. It is too straight-forward for my liking and especially for it being Mastodon. I expect something more from this group that can play their instruments well and can write good songs. This is effeminate cock rock to me and there isn't anything to separate this song from the other Top 40 so-called "rock" songs you hear on the radio. It's grist for the mill. Predictable in its structure and I kept waiting for the breaks of fusion-jazz-prog that usually separate these guys from their peers... but not to be found. I thought closer to the end of the track I might get that, but again they didn't deliver. My guess is the A&R rep at the label brought the hammer down as they always do.

So basically you expected more from them and feel they've been playing watered down songs, betraying their potential.

I'm not a huge fan but there's so much awful music out there, I don't dislike this band. They might be capable of much better work though dunno.

Actually I dig Mastodon. I also think that when Kelliher & Dailor played in TITD and recorded Through the Eyes of God, that this was Austin's crowning moment because of that rhythm section. So again I know where the potential is with this band.

What I am is simply disappointed with this song. So I guess your initial comment above is correct.

after a second listen, I think the song is kind of cool. I like the Ozzy-ish vocals. the chorus made it all make sense to me until the middle of it somewhere...then it got cool again when they came back to the verse without bullshitting it. I might sample the album to see what else they can do.

I am not a Mastodon fanboy, but I do like the band quite a bit. Blood Mountain & Crack The Skye are not what I want from this band. I do own both albums, & I don't hate them, it's just not what I want to hear when I think of Mastodon. Call of the Mastodon, Remission, & Leviathan are all far superior to what they have done lately IMO. I'm all for a band progressing & trying to get better as time goes on, but I don't feel this was the right path for them. I have seen many Mastodon fans call Crack the Skye their best album ever & I just don't get it.

I'm sorry but music videos are just dumb and this song is terrible. I don't know which is worse this or limp biskit.

Honestly, I didn't like Crack The Skye for a while - Leviathan is what introduced me to Mastodon. I can totally appreciate the fact that you don't like this direction...I didn't either. But after many listens, and watching them perform the album live, I've come to really appreciate this album and I can see why others say it's their best one yet. It's tough for me to say it's better than Leviathan - I'm a sucker for Moby Dick - so I won't. But I won't say it's worse either. They're completely different albums. What I initially hated about Crack The Skye was the singing style, but now I find it a strength.
I do remember that "Oblivion" really turned me off - the released it on the web prior to the album release and I just did not like it. I can dig it now, but I began to like other parts of the album before "Oblivion" started to sound good.
Anyway - I now really like the progression from Leviathan, through Blood Mountain, and now Crack The Skye. Skullbrain music cred (not that I had any) be damned!

Though I haven't seen them live, (yet...they will be playing at Outside Lands) I have grown to appreciate this album with more rotations. At first glance I thought, ok, they're trying something new, whatever. But the more I listen, the more I begin to like and appreciate. I think there's also more guitar solos than on previous releases which is always a plus. What really stands out for me with this album is it's production. Been helmed by Brendhan O'Brien, he makes great space of each instrument which adds so much atmosphere. Such a pleasure to listen to with good headphones. I find that's it's an album that I lose myself in.

I've tried to get into them on several occasion, I understand that it is well done but nope,
I don't get onboard.
Isn't kind of a metal version of CCR ?!
