when i saw this preview, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhBMjyJ4gOQ , i was super stoked! but seeing the other previews have set my expectations lower. still looks good, but looks more like an action movie than a dark thinker. i like my aliens to be mysterious and in the shadows, lovecraft style, all in my mind. i'll still go watch this though. |

If you do a search for "Alive in Joburg" you'll find snippets and clips of the short film District 9 is based and expanded upon. It was short film first from about 4 years ago. |

Lalo wrote: still looks good, but looks more like an action movie than a dark thinker. Looks more like an action movie in the trailer. The thing I know about movie marketing and trailers is that you can only judge a trailer so far. And Americans need action filled trailers. So in my mind, the final film will actually be a thinker with a few action scenes. I can easily see some studio marketing guy saying they need to "punch up" a trailer because of "The Transformers" coming out and such. And this is a full length film based on this short film, Alive in Joberg which is pretty decent as far as sci-fi thinker flicks goes. I have hope. |

Very interested in seeing this. I just hope that it has a deeper context to it than being all action packed. |

The upcoming 9, it's Shane Acker's film; Burton is producing, not directing. Pretty impressive to have his short turned into a full-blown film. I hope it holds up. -- jJ |

if you went to SDCC, did you see all the advertising going on for this movie? I didn't see the ad on TV until Monday morning after SDCC at 2 am... but the film looks really good. That Jackson put his name on it is a good sign, me thinks... |

Chad Hensley wrote: if you went to SDCC, did you see all the advertising going on for this movie? Yes, but Sony did all the advertising, the director through it was funny, as none of the alien/hazard sign ad propaganda existed until most recently. The film is AWESOME, and I was able to keep from reading anything or going extensively through online clips/adverts before watching - which is a good thing. I know that it'll get lots of hype, but it deserves it. Neil (director) explained that Aliens, and Alien, are his two favorite movies and biggest inspirations. But no spoilers: go see it, it fucking ruled, and they rocked @ Q&A. |

That new trailer is way more action than I was hoping for it to be. Originally it looked like it was going to be a thinly veiled social commentary, which coming out of South Africa, is perfect and makes sense. Now it looks more actiony I'll probably still see it though. Wish they hadn't watered down the accents and been true to the country a bit more. I have a few Saffa mates who will find this very annoying. |

backtrack wrote: That new trailer is way more action than I was hoping for it to be. But you hafta consider what you're talking about here - it's a movie about aliens in Africa. Technically, that is just as reasonable and serious a film as Kaiju in Japan. Both with this, and with the Kaiju in Japan, you're talking about skirting a dodgy subject, and this is certainly a satirical film - but it's not exactly about Apartheid as it may seem, so directly in the ads. I won't give anything away in detail or ruin any storyline, but they do exactly what they want to do with the film, and the directors only worry was that it hits a little too close to home and will be too close-to-home for it's modern citizens and what's going on over there now. |

Alive in Joburg was brilliant. If I understand correctly almost everything in it was recreated for the full length film. The original teaser trailer for District 9 even included the same digital blurring over the "mouth" of the aliens that was in Alive in Joburg but in the subsequent trailers that effect was removed. Maybe they'll just do the digital masking for the Japanese market. (OK, bad joke.) Can't wait to see this thing. Is it just me or does the ship look like a junkyard version of the Close Encounters mothership? It's sort of funny that "District 9," "9" and "Nine" are all being advertised at the same time. So far as I'm aware none of them include music by Nine Nine Nine. Oh, and on a vaguely related but entirely different subject, the first trailer for Peter Jackson's next directorial effort is out this week: http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/thelovelybones/ At first consideration it looks like a cross between a Guillermo Del Toro movie and an M. Night Shamalama movie, er, if he was any good. Love the cast. |

I hope one of the aliens tells Aunt Esther how ugly she is. That's the best part! PS: Another alien needs to tell Lamont how stupid he is. Because he's an idiot! |
