To be released Aug 18th:

Quote:
Toho, the most famous of all Japanese movie studios, first made its name in the West for the extraordinary masterworks of Akira Kurosawa. But they really struck box office gold with the wildly colorful kaiju eiga (monster movies) that began in 1954 with the original GODZILLA (Gojira), the creation of director Ishiro Honda and special effects wizard Eiji Tsuburaya.

Now for the first time on [Region 1] DVD— and in their original Tohoscope aspect ratios— Sony Pictures presents three Honda classics that display the enormous breadth of the Toho magic during its glory years. THE H-MAN (Bijo to Ekitai Ningen, 1958), BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE (Uchu Daisenso, 1959), and MOTHRA (Mosura, 1961) have been digitally re-mastered for the best possible picture and sound quality, and include the original Japanese versions and the U.S. versions, plus commentaries for two of the films.

It seems kind of odd that they mixed Mothra in with The H-Man and Battle, but I guess since the same creative team did all three films it is understandable (plus Sony can use Ishirō Honda's name and trumpet him as the "Father of Godzilla" on the packaging). One cool thing is that both the American and Japanese versions of all three movies are included, as there are some considerable differences between the two. I'll definitely be picking this up when it's released in a couple weeks!

It's also the three films that Columbia purchased outright from Toho back in the day in 1958, 1959 and 1961, respectively. Interestingly, Columbia was a financial investor in MOTHRA, funding the scenes were Mothra attacks a western (albeit fictitious) metropolis, instead of the climax set in the mountains of Hokkaido (which were already in the can). Columbia's deal is that they secured the rights to the films into perpetuity, wolrdwide (sans Asia), so they never have to answer to Toho -- they own both the US and Japanese versions.

(Horribly bad packaging... They did so much better with the Hammer Films set last year.)

Here are some of my musings on these three films:

Thanks for the insight, August, great stuff!

I loved your Eiji Tsuburaya book, by the way. It lives on my shelf next to the S7 mook. :)

I do believe fans could vote on several different choices for the packaging on this one, as they've done in the past.

I'm a little surprised that's the cover that was chosen.
