Post subject:  Toy Story 3 - First Look
If you have an appreciation for the artistry of CG animation, you've gotta see this. A little bit of the movie's premise is made clear, but the point of this isn't so much to offer a teaser trailer as to show off the state of Pixar's magic. The imagery is stunningly executed without violating the look and feel of the prior two films. HD clips strongly recommended.

I think this movie will speak to people who still like toys after growing up. :D

Thank God Disney didn't go ahead with their threat to make the movie without Pixar a few years ago. Yikes!

I was at Disney at the time and slated to be on TS3. I helped contribute to some of the pipeline stuff and the early tests looked very, very good. The team that was given the go-ahead to do it was given a unique sort of autonomy at Disney, perhaps because it was already known internally that it was simply a bargaining chip in renewing the Pixar/Disney distribution deal.

Had the film come to fruition as a Disney endeavor it would have been a much, much better movie that many would have expected. They had a really great team in place.

All that being said, the clip looks phenomenal. The lighting is top notch.

It's funny...talking about this just reminded me of seeing the original TS in the theater. I remember almost wetting myself when the movie started and I saw that the Disney castle logo was a 3D model instead of the traditional 2D glyph.

I wasn't excited until I saw the clip. The premise is ballsy ... ten years later the kid is leaving for college and leaving toys behind (except for one ...)

It'll be interesting to see how that's handled. Hopefully with the same storytelling finesse that made the first two TS movies contemporary classics.

I wish my lame-o amateur 3D apps could render hair that well.

Deep shadows...it's all about the deep shadows and their fantasmagorical sub-pixel sampling. :)

I hear Carrara pro ( from version 6) onwards has an ok-ish hair and fur plug-in now.

You might want to take a good hard look at the user forums at DAZ regarding the state of Cararra (and for that matter, Bryce, which just received an upgrade but is lightyears behind Vue for that sort of app.) It's a lot of fun but has considerable limitations ... Bryce even more so. In my opinion the best low-end landscape app is Vue (the ProStudio version probably being the best value for the non-professional.) Vue integrates well with Poser, particularly if you export your objects from Poser as .obj files rather than trying to import Poser's .pz3 files.

I used to do some work for DAZ and am fond of the people there, but they aren't exactly the greatest stewards of the software they bought a few years back. The integration of the perpetually-beta DAZ Studio with Bryce was a messy, manipulative thing to do.

Poser with Vue is probably still the best low-end solution. My complaint about hair was half in jest. There's no way that these sorts of apps will ever be able to emulate what the movie studios are doing. Just look at the subsurface scattering in the TS3 clip ... ya gotta pay for that sort of magic, and have immense processing power. :-)

I think I agree really, but I guess it's all about what your doing with it and where you wanna take it. If your just messing around and experimenting then it's all good, bit if your taking it seriously enough that you wanna start doing hair and getting good results I think you should maybe bite the bullet and learn Maya. Speaking from somebody who first experimented with a lot of the lower end software and then advanced to maya, it is complicated but many of the principles are the same ( points, faces, edges, rigging, UVs and texturing).

With Maya there really are no limitations though and once you start understanding Mental Ray aswell your all set.

Sorry, I was actually mocking Bryce and Poser. Maya really is where it's at. Although Zbrush is awesome for sculpting models. The education version of Maya is free I believe, although it has a watermark. Zbrush has the typical 30 day free trial.

I'll also make a disclaimer that I don't really work in 3D, just know a bunch of people who do.

stupid bumpER CAR perhaps but i knew there had to be an existing thread already. i've seen the movie because i was lucky enough to get into a preview screening some time back. it's VERY good but this series hasn't done much so far to validate relationships with toys beyond childhood. the series was pretty hard on collectors in the form of al (scheming flipper voiced by newman) in the second movie, but this film adds time and depth to the relationships and pretty much enhances everything that already existed between the characters. strongly recommended. you might even enjoy yourself in 3d, i saw it in digital and felt like i was missing something

You know, after looking at this thread I realized I haven't seen any of the toy story movies... I think it was a combo of not liking tim allen, and being a teenager when the first movie came out and not giving a crap. I'm going to have to go back and watch them.

I almost cried everytime I saw Totoro.
Other than that, it's OK. Was'nt blow, nether were the kids.
Unlike other Pixar movies, it's somehow hard for me to get any attachment off these characters.

I am going to see this tomorrow afternoon in 3D IMAX after going to the helicopter show in the morning in San Carlos. I hope I can stay awake. How do people who have seen it rate it on a scale of 1 to 10 with ten being exceptional?

I can't wait to bring my son to movies. He's 17 months, the only thing he would sit through for an hour and a half without losing his shit would be yo gabba gabba and the video game Rock Band. Both have been tested and proven

it was pretty good. IMAX 3D is the only way to go, but the stupid popcorn dude took forever and we were left with seats in the front and had to crane our necks up to see.

great story line. highly recommended kid or not.
