Sigh. I'd say that Hollywood is out of ideas, but I think we all figured this out a long time ago. In a world full of incompetent Alan Moore film adaptations, the Hughes brothers are the only team to pull off one that payed decent respect to it's original work in "From Hell". As much as I hate to see Akira redone, the animated movie itself left a lot of elements and details out from the graphic novel(series). It could be argued that the original animated film, while being critically important to pushing forward anime as a medium, wasn't in itself the greatest adaptation of the original printed series. Many people felt the story itself was oversimplified. I will hold reservation in that the Hughes brothers might possibly do a good job. They could also fall flat on their faces, but I'm not going to pre judge them based on some fanboy like dedication to the original anime feature. I just hope leo dicaprio stays as far away from this as possible. |

naaah. Akira is perfect the way it is IMHO. the manga gives you something different than the movie, but both are amazing in their own right and I love them just the way they are. I even dig that Mr. Otomo made the movie quite different than the manga. I must watch Akira 2-3 times a year. I guess it goes without saying that when I heard that they were going to dump the idea of doing a remake, I was relieved...but I guess they're still at it... I don't think it's going to come close to being what the originals are (classics)--so why do it? the odds are against them! I would love to see the animated film in the theaters again. |

my mind is still blown when I watch it. I'd only look forward to seeing a re-do of Akira--one that might follow the manga more closely--if it was written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo himself. and it was cell animation. and it would probably have to be a series. |

I think that is exactly why there is a "fanboy dedication" regarding the original Akira, It was great the way it was. I highly doubt the new team taking up the production duties for this new remake would bother or would even be aware of the existence of the graphic novel. I've given Hollywood the benefit of the doubt (not to mention my cash) only to be disappointed every time. I wont slag on this new remake but my prediction is not favorable for it either. |

Exactly, are they going to make a movie for a handful of Akira faithfuls, or for the large population of movie-goers who have never seen anime except for Pokemon and just like to marvel at special effects. Anyway, I'll probably see it, mostly because I just want to see Kaneda's bike and the Clowns in live action. |

maybe it will be the Hughes brothers version of Akira, or maybe it will be Cameron's remake of Battle Angel Alita, but statistically one of these remakes has to be good.

Why think any movie is supposed to be exact to a comic, a book, a series, a cartoon, etc. Maybe it can be good and enjoyable in it's own right since it could never live up to the standards of every single fans individual interpretation and expectation. I actually enjoyed, and I am sure a lot of stone casters here will nail me for this, Constantine despite it not living up to Hellblazer in any way whatsoever. Same with many others. A movie is always a cheap knock off of a book or manga or comic. That's ok. I can't wait for The last Airbender and I am expecting nothing good of it so that I can just enjoy it anyways. I am curious to see a live action version of that kid in Akira bubbling forth in non-stop growth in the stadium. Gooey. |

There is absolutely no way this is going to be any good. There are just too many reasons stacked against it. It is Hollywood after all. This film, which has been in limbo for a while (lets hope it stays there) has got me thinking about how fans of the original manga must have felt when the animated feature was being made... And the film turned out amazing, with its quality being totally comparable to the source material IMO. How come we fucking can't get adaptions like that nowadays? |

The opening bike chase in Akira, with the music is my favorite cinematic sequence ever. I just bought it on Bluray recently and it was fucking incredible. I actually work as an animator and I would say that seeing Akira when I was young was probably instrumental in infulencing me to take that path. I am amazed that some of you guys retain any hope that the film could be anything other than a steaming pile of shit. You could assemble the best actors of all time along with the best director and it would still be an epic fail, because it is perfect as it is. Has there ever been a succesful adaptation of a cartoon to a film? Rick Moraious killed his career with the Flintstones. |

Neo New York? Wuahaha. Post apocalyptic Atomic themes is all about Tokyo...most of the darker Manga themes are inspired from their own history. For live action we have Blade Runner already, no one can outclass this one from the west. For all those that say that it should not necessary be like the manga for the film adaptation then why fucking bother to borrow from the original then? If you can't respect the original, don't bother. Look what happened to Astro Boy. Did anyone see 21st Century Boy trilogy? The manga was brilliant and at least they stuck to it in the live action. |

I think it's Leo's Production studio. I also heard they'll be making a live action Ninja Scroll as well. I guess he's a big anime fan.
