What a powerful and eye opening documentary! If you haven't seen it, you should. Be warned it is very graphic and can be hard to watch at times. http://www.thecovemovie.com/ |

My trip to the then-new San Antonio Sea World in 1988 cured me of ever going to those sorts of parks again. They didn't even try to hide the cruelty. |

ironic you mention this - we were watching The September Issue last night and they had a trailer for it. I remember the reviews for this but didn't think it was out for rental. Adding to NetFlix now..... |

It's really good. The Cove and Facing Ali were the best documentaries I saw from last year hands down. |

I haven't seen the Cove yet and I don't eat Dolphin but..... is the way the Japanese treat these dolphins any more horrific than the way we treat cows, chickens, pigs, etc.? |

The ending to the Cove is Makes me think the South Park episode was lightweight compared to the real thing. |

Kevlo, not trying to stir shit, but how is that? I believe what Western culture is doing to animals to be just as cruel as what is shown in The Cove; it may be a different kind of cruelty directed at less "likeable" species, but it's just as disgusting in my eyes. I have to say I found the lobbying & the political manipulation behind it all way more disturbing than the slaughter itself, although the images of the bloodstained sea are undeniably very powerful. |

Dolphins are smart. Chickens and cows are dumb. (Pigs are also smart, but also very delicious.) |

I don't know. This is definitely debatable. I personally think killing and animal suffering is wrong. It's the reason I abstain from eating animals and attempt to abstain from using animal products as much as possible. I think the difference for me between the two is that the slaughter house is a much more controlled environment than the coves open net "pins". Animals in slaughterhouses are largely stunned and killed soon after. The spearing in blood soaked water with the dolphins running around until bleeding out seems far worse. But again it's all fucking terrible in my eyes. |

The dolphin killing shown in The Cove is obviously most cruel and may seem far worse, but I think the "controlled environment" in a slaughterhouse is actually a lot more perfidious. And while animals in slaughterhouses are largely stunned and killed soon after they usually have to endure lots of abuse before... Its because no one wants to see flipper or lassie in pain, but most don't care about bertha the cow. I mean, we had a talking horse, but you don't see any loveable cows or chickens in the classic stuff. (Now wilbur, that was some pig.) |

I think the one point he made in the film was what we do to cows is known, but what is being done to the dolphins is unknown to most of the Japanese. |

Pirates and secret agents, setting up spy camsssss, fighting that whale war. Who ever thought saving the whales would turn out to be THIS cool, those whale wars guys got funded by Bob Barker and got that freakin' bat boat thing and slammed it into a whaling vessel too. The bonus footage on the cove dvd about mercury levels in fish and thermasol was crazy. |
