Post subject:  fast food/mexican food in San Diego

alright guys, important topic.

seeing at this will be my first visit to California, I'm very excited to visit all the local fast food chains that we do not have out here on the East coast.

I don't know what the opinion on fast food is around here (most people of course trash it because after all, it is garbage) but I'm somewhat of a connoisseur. places I'm psyched to try:

-Del Taco
-Jack-In-The-Box
-possibly Weinerschnitzel/Original Hamburger Stand (although we have 2 of those in Pennsylvania, both located in the town where I was born and raised)

what else should I try? I know there are only so many meals and transportation will be limited and I'll be around the convention center a lot, but I'd like to ingest at least some of this crap while I'm there.

AND

if at all possible, I'd like to try some REAL Mexican food, probably the most authentic I might ever get considering the proximity

any and all recommendations will be appreciated. also, any of you can feel free to invite yourselves along to indulge with me if you'd like.

as for mexican food i will vouche for pokez or valentines, they are both in the downtown area.

Pokez is like young tattooed folk runnin it, pretty cool good food and its vegan friendly. serve beer too

Valentines is more like any normal taco shop in San Diego but it just taste really good.

both spots is pretty damn mexican.

if you want like straight up all the funky tacos made of cow eyes, brain, head, etc, pork go to tacos el gordo theres a few all over san diego. they got normal tacos too but its about as mexican a taco you can get without leavin to mexico

Skyler,
Del Taco is a step better than Taco Bell
Jack-n-the box is pretty good
Weinerschnitzels (sp) try it to say you did, but not missing much

Carl's Jr is the greatest fast food chain ever!!!!! The Double Western Bacon Cheeseburgers and an order of the seasoned criss cross fries are a gift from heaven!!!!!!!

In n Out Burgers is a very memorable experience. Fast food done the way your Grandmother would be proud of. Everything done fresher than fresh right as you order. You can actually watch the kids cutting the potatos into french fries and then frying them up. Not frozen!!!

Not exactly fast food but you gotta go to Foggy Notions or Foggy's Notion ( I can't remember which is right). A great touristy kinda place with a great local feel. The place is jam packed full of stuff. Including a covered wagon hanging fromthe ceiling, a giant King Kong hand, and just crazy stuff everywhere. Plus the burgers kick ass!!!

But since you are going to be in the center of Mexican American culture...if you only have time to try one place. Just pick any (and I mean any) of the local mom and pop taco stands!!! The best buritto I ever had was in a place named Umbertos in Imperial Beach. And just about any of the other places I tried were only a hair behind in quality of tacos and burittos. Nothing better than watching you tortilla being made fresh and watching real meat being put into it!!!!!!!!
And if you like fish and you don't try a fish taco, you will regret it for the rest of your life.

DAMN I miss living in San Diego!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you can get to a Weinerschnitzel on a sunday, they usually discount their chilidogs on sundays... I love their chilidogs.

well as I mentioned, Wienerschnitzel is on the bottom of my list, because I actually have been to one.

I'm mainly into tacos and greasy burgers and fries that I can't get out east here.

Skyler,
Then you will absolutely love Carl's Jr and In n Out Burger!!!
And Del Taco's soft chicken taco is great for fast food Mexican.
The fast food here in the east just isn't the same,

I don't know if you have Hardee's by you. That's what Carl's Jr is like. In fact i think they are the same company.
That Double Western Bacon Cheeseburger is 2 beef patties, cheese, bacon, onion rings and bbq sauce!!! I'd kill for one right now.

You know why it's discounted on Sunday don't you? Kitchen Confidential "don't order the fish special on Mondays.

Do they have Fat Burger or Tommy Burgers as far down as SD?

I do believe that Hardee's and Carl's Jr. are the same company. there are unfortunately no Hardee's near Philadelphia that I know of. we really only have the big 3 here (Mcdonalds, Burger King, Wendy's), although Philadelphia proper has several Checker's (known as Rally's in the midwest).

is Roy Rogers still around?

Author:  skylar [ Thu Jun 29, 2006 8:24 pm ]
Post subject:

we have a few out here in PA and NJ, but I believe they are exclusively at turnpike rest areas. at least the 2-3 that I know of are.

but that works out because Roy Rogers isn't that good when you just eat it for dinner, but when you're on a long car trip and haven't eaten for hours and hours and are totally starving, it takes like the best cheeseburger you've ever had

I've gone to the show five of the last seven years and on the last day I always went to Bazaar del Mundo in Old Town for a little Mexican shopping and food. My fiance and I always had a great time just buying day of the dead junk and hanging out away from the show for one day. There's this incredible Mexican place not in the Bazzar but across the street from it. I for the life of me cant remember it's name but I am sure as soon as I post this it will come rushing back to me so I can come edit it. It's a lot of fun if you want to take some time from the show.

Mine you need transportation for, but it's truly authentic Mexican food and very good.

Edit: La Pinata

There used to be a Jack in the Box in Bergenfield New Jersey, when I was growing up. I remember their mascot was like a knock-off Hamburgurler.

My west coast peeps are always crowing about Fat Burger. Is it any good?

Nothing beats White Castle!
