Like Michael Jackson, I couldn't care less that he's dead. Punk existed before and after this con man. A glorified Lou Pearlman if you ask me |

Watch the documentary 'The Filth & the Fury'. John(ny) Lydon (Rotten) has a few choice stories about what a douchebag this guy was. (I am sure there are lotsa interviews out there, but this movie sticks in my mind.) |

I liked the clothing he and Vivienne Westwood came up with...I've owned a cheesecloth shirt and plaid bondage pants in my youth....But that's about it. As far as art and fashion, they had some great ideas. |

bannedindc wrote: Punk existed before and after this con man. Thank you for making me feel less guilty about my reaction to the news. He's one of those people who led a fascinating life but did screw others over along the way. An impresario who made a big impact, for sure. It's a conundrum ... without the London "Sex" shop and the Bromley Contingent and all that, UK punk might not have had such a huge influence on international culture. For what it's worth, without his association, Vivienne Westwood might never have become one of the UK's best-known designers. On the other hand, the bitterness of the Pistols to this day seems justified. I bought a big dopey jacket that he designed from Poseur on Melrose back in '82. Stupidest thing ever ... it made me look like an Adam Ant fan. But it was showy and Malcom-y in a neo-rockabilly way that caught my attention. In retrospect, it makes sense that I shelled out for it and then never wore it in public. There's no way to assess Malcom McLaren without looking at the positive and the negative. Another goofy memory ... circa 1979 or so there was an illegal showing of "The Great Rock and Roll Swindle" at the Victoria theater here in San Francisco. My suburban "punk" buddies and I drove up the peninsula to see it. It was projected onto a screen from a pirate VHS using one of those awful old projection set things. We thought the movie was hilarious (and actually Malcom comes off sort of twisted and cool in it) but during the movie, some huge fight broke out in the audience. It was pretty nasty ... chains flying, people actually getting hurt, blood running from heads. My friends were a little intimidated by it all and retired from anything more punk than Talking Heads and Blondie after that. From the old punk perspective, Malcom's crime wasn't so much that the Pistols got ripped off, it was more that he seemed insincere. However, things wouldn't have been as much fun without him. R.I.P. |

Punk, sonny? I recently played my son the first Gang of Four album and he just looked at me like I had farted. Guess OG Punk is like Glenn Miller records to these young whippersnappers. |

But as with The Stranglers, The Fall, Pere Ubu or any other number of not-really-punk bands, the audience would have been the "punk" audience. At least until that I love a man in a uniform song. |
