Post subject:  Toddlers and displays
So I just got two Klingsbos (too many Detolfs around...) for toys and my toddler has promptly started pummeling on them and wanting to open and close the doors and remove the shelves and do what toddlers usually do.

I was wondering if some of you have got tips on how to:

1) Avoid babies hurting themselves
2) Keep toys stable in the displays
3) Keep them free of hand prints (kidding, I'll clean them daily)

Or do you have better display solutions? Do they learn some toys are theirs and some their daddy's when they grow up?

And since we're talking of babies, I let mine play with my toys, up to a limit (when he starts bashing them on furniture), but I heard weird stories on how even handling vinyl constantly can cause health problems for babies. Of course, I don't let him suck or chew them (though I found some teeth marks on one piece...)... Still, am I being paranoid?

My daughter is 11 months and she loves my display case... I have the Ikea detolf... yeah she can bang on it and knock stuff over...It's ok though It's kinda funny! (But yeah don't want her to get hurt though!) I keep my case in Mom and Dad's room away from her usual play area so that seems to help. It's kinda funny she loves my guitars and toy case! I don't let her play with them though. She has PLENTY of baby toys... I figured i'll keep mine in good shape and hand them down to her when she is old enough to appreciate them... She's so funny though :lol: Maybe try moving it to a more secluded Mom and Dad area. IMO you can never be too paranoid as a parent. Good lookin' out! :)

Yeah there's no such thing in our apartment. The toys are already in "dad's area" as per mom's wishes, but so are all the records and books which the 17-month old looooves to play with as well.

Like some people were saying in the other thread, it's a good thing they're easily distracted and I'm gladly not someone who cares much about "mintiness" so I don't mind him playing with them (the GID Ilanea with LEDs were favourite bath toys...), but neither would I want him to get vinyl poisoning or to cut himself on the shelf. We have another one on the way, so I hope he'll learn quick and teach his brother/sister how to behave near them! :D

You can look into a case hanging on the wall option. Instead of a large standing display case standing on the ground, a wall mounted case might be better since you can get them up high where the kid can't reach.

give 'em big toys to play with. Then the small ones are less interesting....

there should be a sub-topic, Cats and Displays...

Mine are always required to leave the room whenever I open the detolf. This, I hope, prevents them from learning the mystery of how those shiny things get inside.

I had to rearrange one of my displays as my chinchilla knocked over a $70 toy and my new dsi, I have mostly shelves in my appartment, it does mean more dusting but you can put them anywhere, and good rubbermaid shelves at home depot are around the same price per square foot as a detolf if not a bit cheaper, and they have a neo classical air when you have wall to wall "wood" shelves covered in vinyl, it is like a library of monsters

you say $70 toy like that's something special here.

Cats and toys are a bad combo, at least kids will eventually respond, cats continue to puke, scratch and create dust for 18 years.

Those are great pictures, Kirkland. Couple more years, your son can start coming with you to toy events (well, some of them, at least :P ). It's great you let me roam freely like that. Are those recent pictures?

no I say $70 toy because having a few minis or blinds knocked over by a pet is no biggy but even seeing something moderately priced take a 4 foot drop could easily ruin your night,chinchillas bath in dust so I know your pain, but so do kids I suppose
