Free digital comics at:

Basically a digital comic book reader with social stuff built in...

Will digital books will ever match printed ones for sheer reading
pleasure? What about comic books and graphic novels? I think it
depends on what device you are reading them. One of the most visually
stunning apps on the iPad, for instance, is the Marvel Comics reader.
You just swipe from page to page, and when you tap on a frame it
becomes larger and moves forward. The swiping gives the comics a sense
of motion you don’t get on paper.

A startup called Graphic.ly is taking a similar approach and adding
social elements. It recently came out of beta with an AIR app for
desktops which includes a digital comic reader, store, and social
activity feed. Apps for the iPad, iPhone, Android, and Windows 7 are
coming soon. And eventually it will exists as native Web app as well.

This sounds cool.

The Marvel app for the ipad is neat and looks realy good, but $1.99 for a digital copy seems too high for me and they have a very limited selection of titles.

$1.99 seems right considering that the same comic on paper is probably double that and doesn't look as good. I wish that Marvel would use the tiff versions of the pages instead of the jpegs, but I guess that it would take up too much storage space.

a tif is only going to help you print pages, there is no visible quality difference on screen.

Marvel has me hooked on their digital reader. Probably first series of comics I bought (not graphic compilation) just because it was easy to acquire and reads really well with their app on the iphone.

$1.99 would be ok if there was something worth buying...selection is WAY too limited and not much of interest. I agree that the app is cool and will rule a year or so from now when they start adding some decent titles.

Yeah, from what i have seen the selection is pretty limited for now. I think a lot of the good stuff on there most comic readers would have already picked up. I think it's mostly for people that don't really know whats happening in comics. I thought Thor looked really cool on the ipad. I'm wondering when new releases will start showing up on it.

i would like to take all the header cards I'm doing right now for Nagx3 and make it into a digital comic. Story filled with controversy. How do I do that?

I know you can use Adobe InDesign to lay out a book and then export it to EPUB format that the iPad would read, but there's no real control over layout. It's just a stream of text and images.

You could lay it out in InDesign (or Quark or whatever) and make it a Acrobat PDF which the iPad could read, but then I'd have no idea how to build in gestures and swipes so you could "page" through it or zoom in.

Probably going to take some time before there are better tools.
