Lurker, NYT is saying 82 Frank Frazetta, Fantasy Illustrator, Dies at 82 By DAVE ITZKOFF Frank Frazetta, an illustrator whose vivid colors and striking brushstrokes conjured up fantastic worlds of musclebound heroes fighting with broad swords and battle axes to defend helpless women from horrible beasts, died on Monday in Fort Myers, Fla. He was 82. The death, caused by a stroke, was confirmed by Rob Pistella and Steve Ferzoco, his business managers. In a telephone interview, Mr. Pistella said that Mr. Frazetta, who had a history of strokes, had returned from a Mother’s Day dinner with his family on Sunday night and complained of feeling ill. Emergency medical services were called and Mr. Frazetta was rushed to the hospital, where he died. After working on daily comic strips like “Buck Rogers,” “Flash Gordon” and “Li’l Abner,” Mr. Frazetta moved onto comic books in the 1950s. He drew the movie poster for “What’s New Pussycat?” in 1964, and hit his stride executing detailed illustrations of pulp heroes like Conan the Barbarian and John Carter of Mars for their comic magazines and books. His realistic renderings of otherwordly scenarios (and barely clad women) made him the ideal candidate to illustrate the album covers for popular heavy metal albums like Molly Hatchet’s “Flirtin’ With Disaster” and Nazareth’s “Expect No Mercy.” In November, Wired.com reported, Mr. Frazetta’s cover artwork for the paperback reissue of “Conan the Conqueror” by Robert E. Howard sold to an unnamed collector for $1 million. |

Oh, man. His imitators are many, but he will never have an equal. The man and his work inspired and influenced countless aspiring artists and creative people. Wow! I can't even put into words how much his work meant to me as I was growing up. |

He was pretty much the main reason why I decided to become an artist as a child. The master is gone but his legacy will be around for so much longer! |

Always sad when one of the big guns goes. liquidsky wrote: Damn. And meanwhile, whatever happened to the John Carter of Mars movie? Pixar/Disney is in pre-production on this - it's going to be their first live-action movie. Andrew Stanton, who directed Wall-E, is directing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Carter_of_Mars_(film) |

This is really sad news to hear. I did get to meet him once but I don't remember what I said, probably "I love the snake and Conan painting the most"! Or somehing stupid like that. I was lucky to have a cool mom, she was the one with the Frazetta art all over the house when I was growing up. I think the naked lady pictures freaked my friends parents out so that was a plus, combine with that my mom painting the living room black didn't hurt either. |

The thing about Frazetta is he really reached out past fandom into the general world. Folks who don't know who he is know his work and his style. He'll be missed. |

Shit The original. The master. When ever i hear Franks name mentioned or see his art i think of Kaze in the documentary 'Style Wars'. "You know where he got that from, right? Vaughn Bode and who? Frank Frazettaaaaa” http://garywarnett.wordpress.com/2009/10/25/style-wars-the-beastmaster/ Always loved this painting....

I shall not mourne him! I shall shred my shirt and grasp my broad sword as I stand upon a mighty heap of my slain enemies and nubile women clamour to my feet and the wind whips my blood stained hair. There I shall scream his praises so he may hear them deep in the Halls of Valhalla and dragons will cower at the mention of his name! A master gone, but still here forever. There was a "Death Dealer" painting hanging on the wall in the room I was married in Vegas and it was the sole reason we chose that place. We walked in, they said they had themed rooms, we saw the "Knights Court" and I saw Frank's work on the wall and looked at my to-be wife and said "Yeah, this is THE PLACE!" He lived a long life it seems. But he'll be remembered for even longer. |
