Remember when "Bad" meant good. Now "Bad" is just bad. And "Stupid" is good. |

Seriously - this makes me fear for humanity - if I'm too old, fine. But I just dont get it. The beats are fine, but teh visuals and some of teh words made me puke. No love for each other, let alone anyone else. Came aross as callous. Plus I dont really want to hear ""I'M ABOUT TO BE BANNED"" and "I FART A LOT" and "Ho" ever again - fomr anyone, especially a "world weary" 16 year old. Video has a slick producton feel to it - smells like explotation to me - willing exploitation no doubt. Pursuit of notoriety is a beast. Just looks at teh hours of junk "reality" TV...and this is just more of teh same. I'm honestly sorry I upped the view count. If I am missing something - feel free to discourse. |

This pretty much sums up how I felt when I heard "Straight Outta Compton" for the first time... Everybody disgusted with Earl and lamenting the missing soul & deepness here should check out the new Jet Age of Tomorrow, also available from the Odd Future camp. They may be a bunch of vile sociopaths, but they are undeniably incredibly talented sociopaths. |

I think with any artform, it comes down to two basic categories... the soulfull and the soulless. But then they can be further divided into the talented and untalented soulfull/soulless, and so on. Earl doesn't spit with much if any depth or constructive message behind his words. Some may disagree, but to me, hip hop is most notably about the sound aesthetics of your flow... meshing your dialogue. I think Earl is fantastic at doing this and I would argue that the kid has some definite talent in putting his words together. Of course, there are many artists who have both soul and a great sound, such as the before mentioned Mighty Mos, Kweli, Murs, Nas, Atmosphere, Lauren Hill, and so forth and so on. Recently, however, I've seen a lack of artists gaining any notoriety who touch on even one of those categories. It seems like any artist that even places a foot in the spotlight sounds terrible and has absolutely nothing to say. C'mon... Gucci Mane? I'm positive there are many kids spitting without a record deal who would blow us away with their talents and heart. But it is refreshing to at least see a new up and comer gaining some recognition who actually knows how to piece his sentences together. |
