ANYTHING by Norifumi Suzuki.
Come for the foxy Japanese ladies, sure, but stay for some of the most insane film making you're likely to ever come across. Genuinely unique.
Girl Boss Guerilla ('72) and Terrifying Girls' High School: Lynch Law Classroom ('73), both easily Netflikable, are where I got my introduction.

***

Thriving custom-subtitling communities exists just below the surface of our commercial world - if you find you like what Norifumi had to offer I'd suggest digging just a little bit through the crust to try and find hours more of his filmed entertainments.

Yeah, I figured things like Miike, Kurosawa, and Ghibli are pretty much a given. Surprised no one has mentioned Seijun Suzuki though; for being ripped off so many times alone, this guy deserves some serious credit overseas (Kill Bill owes him so much). But anyways, I really like a lot of the smaller asian films (okay I am cheating a bit and including Korean cinema), which is why I LOVE Fantasia, and am so bummed about missing it this year. A couple good examples from recent years that come to mind such as The Clone Returns Home, The Executioner, Fine Totally Fine, Boys on the Run, Symbol, Hansel and Gretel....anyways, I could go on for pages.

Also, those Norifumi Suzuki films look great, cheesy 70s action (that is actually good) is right up my alley. One final note is that I wasn't really thinking about anything not recent, so all those great kaiju movies which is why most of us are on this board :D

Post Re: Japanese Movie Thread
Thanks for all your japanese movie madness! I am a big fan of Anime as well. Feel free to post them also!

NT, Hell yeah, totally forgot Battle Royale!! My bad. I have seen both of them some time ago. If i remember right the first one is a "must see" and the second one is just a bad remake.
Tampopo, will be added to my Watchlist. Thanks

Toothaction, I don't remember anything about HAUSU. Judging by you screens it looks like an insane movie for my watchlist, thanks! Just like Tampopo I am more unfamiliar with the some what older japanese Movies. And By older i mean everything older than 10 years or so. Again my bad;) Spook warfare, 100 monsters, along with ghosts made it to the top of my watch list and I will definately try some Girl Boss Guerilla and Terrifying Girls' High School: Lynch Law Classroom in the near future.

damaged Bryan, Great list!! Vampire girl vs frankenstein girl, robo geisha, visitor Q, Machine Girl seem to be as insane as some of my favorites, nice! I never heard about Samurai Western Django so I will check that one out. I have seen Seven samurai and I think everybody should see it!! But please do not watch it through a pair of modern glasses.. I heard about yojimbo but did not see it yet but just like 7 samurai a movie that deserves our time. Big AMEN to both Miike and Kurawsawa!!!
The Anime you stated deserves to be on this thread, all are must see!!! I wanted to give some extra attention to Tokyo Godfathers. Such a fun movie!!

nefasth, Thanks for adding some Anime! I have seen a lot of anime but those two covers i have not seen before. Titles please..

organic_addict, definately two solid titles!!

ultrakaiju, thanks for your knowledge^^ I don't have a problem broading our scope to asian flicks;) I am just looking for movies i should see but have not seen. I will definately check out most of the titles you mentioned! Thanks!

psilo110, Meat Ball Machine sounds like heaven to me. It made it to the top of my watch list^^

I fucking love 13 Assassins. It may be the only film I have seen twice in the cinema.

I'm pretty chuffed in September I'm screening the first three Female Convict film and Jasper Sharp is coming along to intro them.
Was trying to screen both Lady Snowbloods, but no luck.

I'd add Horrors of Malformed Men, Jiguko, Bohachi, Zero Woman - Red Handcuffs, Blind Woman's Curse, most PV stuff to this list.
I have drawn a complete blank on the name of one of my favourites and can't seem to find it.... I'm sure it'll pop into my head at some random moment :)

I will be checking out the horrors you added and I am looking forward to you remembering your favourites!

I meant to say, Arrow Video just released a BluRay box set of Battle Royal, which is worth every penny. Even the DVD set is. Whether you pick up the box or just the single disc you should upgrade whatever copy you have in your collection. It's fully remastered and looks incredible. The previous transfers were terrible, dark and muddy, it's much crisper now and makes so much of a difference.

ANYTHING by Seijun Suzuki.

An absolutely ahead of his time cinematic madman - ultrakaiju and organic_addict were dead right to mention him. He's remained creative, ground-breaking and vital for every one of the 55 years he's been making movies.

Criterion has a decent bio of him and also hosts previews for all the films of his they've issued.

If you like the crazy modern action and crime pictures AT ALL do yourself a favor and have a look at where they came from - My other favorite Suzuki.

I've not dipped into Iwai yet, thanks for the reminder, but I'd like to second Koabayashi and Masumura - really great stuff.
I'd add Kwaidan ('63) and Inn of Evil ('71) to the list of Kobayashi pics you should have a look at.
Masumura's Blind Beast really blew my mind a few years back. I'd say it's best not to know too much about this story of a blind sculptor before you sit down with it, but I would like to share one of his 'pieces' with you as an enticement:

To all of you Battle Royal enthusiasts out there - If you haven't already, look into the directors' work from the '70s. Kinji Fukasaku directed many excellent crime and character studies during the decade, not least of which is his five film series The Yakuza Papers. It does an amazing job of tracing the complex goings on in and around a crime syndicate that formed at the end of WW2 through the 30 years that followed. You can find an appreciative review of the first film here.

ImageImageImageImageImage

Props to ultrakaiju for reminding me of it last night.

Masumura made Blind Beast, actually, but Fukasaku did do Black Lizard,

the greatest film involving jewel heists, a kidnapping ploy, the making of human statues, and a battle of wits with a brilliant detective - that happens to star a female impersonator - of all time!

>Check out CiNeBeATS for a nice article and some lovely snaps.

How is The Green Slime, by the way? I know there's two version, American and Japanese, but I've seen neither.
