Saw the new Soderbergh film "Contagion" tonight. I knew it would be a slow burn but I did like the film overall. Pretty much 'Outbreak' but more of a worldly focus, minus coughing blood, and with lots of post 9/11 conspiracies on corporate pharmaceutical giants. |

Just saw it. Reminded me of Soderbergh's "Traffic" stylistically with a little bit of "Solaris" thrown in. A good movie, definitely intelligent, stylish and beautifully photographed, but I thought there were some holes in at least one of the concurrent plot lines. (Jude Law's especially.) No biggie, though. I think it's been mischaracterized by some critics as a throwback to 1970s disaster films. It's nothing like that. Much classier, smarter, and virtually no emphasis on spectacle or thrills like those goofy (and often boring) old disaster films. Worthwhile if you're interested. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water followed by a hand sanitizer. Thank you. |

I'm a bit of a germ-a-phobe and ironically enough we had someone hacking up a lung during the movie a few rows in front of us. I turned to my g/f and said: "Well we know who patient x is in this theater!" I could see the disappointment on some young kids who thought it was going to be gory with blood coming out of the eyes of victims and Matt Damon reprising his 'Bourne Identity' role pulling off some super action stunts. I thought the pace was really brilliant. I mean it's a thinking persons disaster film. Don't get me wrong I'm for the post apocalyptic type also, but this one was refreshing. Besides Gwyneth Paltrow dies in the beginning what could be better? Another good film (that is similar in pace) was a small indie one without the huge global scale of a virus called One Hundred Mornings. Irish film from 2010. Definitely worth checking out. |

I like Gwyneth Paltrow! Bring on the hate people! All of the actors were great. Loved Jude Law's Julian Assange-like nuances. And bad teeth. Same sort of thing happened at the showing I attended, Lixx. Whenever an audience member coughed or sneezed, everyone laughed. |

I’m not against “thinking person’s” films, but I cannot think of a film I could care less about. I remember seeing Traffic and being beyond bored to tears. I like some of Soderbergh’s work, but when he gets preachy and pedantic, who cares. It’s like listening to an NPR show about an important topic: I get it, it’s important and this is a detailed explanation but I can’t stand being preached to. Also no disrespect to germaphobes, but that’s another pet peeve of mine: germaphobes. They will end up hurting themselves more form the stress their phobia causes them than any germ ever will. And I don’t want to be a part of any high-minded discussion about germs and health. So tedious. Bleagh. |

Then why did you bother to post? Just ignore this thread. |

Well, sorry about that then. But basically I loved a lot of Steven Soderbergh’s early stuff, and the whole Oceans series is fun, so I don’t hate his stuff. Nor do I hate thinking person’s films, but this is the kind of film that is just something people have been constantly saying “You must see this!” and I’m like, “Nope.” Whatever. Not a crab, but just sayin’ |
