I was excited about seeing that film for over a year as it made its way around various festivals without finding general release. When it finally came out (I rented it at iTunes) it was well worth the wait. They really get it right in terms of the fans' love/hate relationship with Lucas and what was wrong with the prequels. It also argues the notion that the popularity of Star Wars ruined Lucas as a once-promising director. It doesn't go into as much detail as I'd hoped on some points (e.g. it glosses over the Jar-Jar as Stepin Fetchit controversy) but gets the balance right in the end. There's quite a bit of fan film footage, some cool geeks, some tragic geeks who blame their inability to control their spending on Uncle George ... very entertaining little film. See it if interested! |

There's an old fan doco from when menace came out which is hilarious, throughout the whole thing the main guy passionately spews venom at anyone who says anything negative about SW and the approaching PHANTOM MENACE and threatens violence to anyone who isn't a uber-SW-nerdork saying he will see it "10 times on the first day and F*** everyone who doesn't instantly worship it." He books out a cinema for opening night for him and all his friends. When it's over and the credits of the actual doco have rolled they show him coming out swearing and screaming "WHAT THE F*** WAS THAT SH**? WAS THAT A JOKE?" and he has a total meltdown and kicks over bins and goes and sits in the gutter with his head in his hands. In the background you hear a voice say "Jar Jar Binks man......Jar Jar Binks. What were they thinking." I wish I knew what that was because that was great. That guy was a total goofball. I don't even know if it was real because why would you release something that made you look like a total lunatic spaz? |

On the topic of geeking out, has anyone caught Comic-Con Episode Four: A Fan's Hope? It may only be making the festival circuit now, but the reviews are generally good, and it just won the audience award at the Doha Tribeca festival. I am not a Morgan Spurlock fan, but I was happy to hear that he does not appear in the film at all, nor provide any narration or have any personal on camera stake in it. There is a good review of the film from someone who saw it at TIFF, which sounds fair to me, but even with it's flaws I'd still enjoy a screening I am sure. Also, for more enjoyable geek culture stock, I would recommend Trekkies (1 & 2), Darkon and Monster Camp, and Fistful of Quarters. |
