Amazing news! Completely unsurprising that August Ragone had a hand in making this happen. It's a little unfortunate that Hi no Tori now has to yank their excellent fansubs off the web, but it's a small price to pay for such a great box being released into the world. Lets all buy three copies to encourage US companies to release more such goodies! |

i didn't even realize there was a banned episode Quote: Tsuburaya Productions has agreed to officially remove all mention of this episode. As far as they are concerned, it does not exist. It has been excised from the cannon, and is no longer shown in reruns. You cannot find it mentioned in any Japanese books, and it is simply skipped over on episode lists. Japanese fans obviously go nuts for the opportunity to see it. The episode's aliens were considered offensive by a group of Japanese activists who defend "HIBAKUSHA" (survivors of the World War II atomic holocausts of Hiroshima). In the story, the aliens are Spell-seijin, who use fashionable wrist watches to suck blood out of their victims in order to replace their own blood, which is polluted with radiation. At first they go after only young women, but discover that the blood of children is more pure. However, in the only country to ever have radioactive wartime casualties, the topic of cleansing evil radioactive vampires with the blood of children brings up a whole bag of politics, since HIBAKUSHA were already experiencing considerable discrimination as it was. When a Japanese magazine article referred to the Spell-seijin as HIBAKUSHA-monsters, activists operating on behalf of HIBAKUSHA had Tsuburaya Productions promise to ban the offensive episode. Having now seen it, I can understand why the creature was considered offensive.... he's got all of these welts on his body that seem to be the result of the radioactive poisoning. |

Definitely some excellent news on the release. Maybe all our fanboy whining over the lack of anglicised Ultra-Q will also get some attention. Too bad about Ep. 12. I can understand the sensitive nature of course, but it is something that was made, thus for better or worse its existance and particulars are known and have become part of history. Plus, Spiru Seijin is pretty cool. It is a shame the connection with hibakusha was drawn, as it was obviously unintentional. Seems pretty plain the 'enemy' is radiation itself (or the users thereof) and not the victim of it. |

exciting! the shows and toys go hand in hand i also didn't know that Spiru Sejin was from a banned episode. it's nice that Siccaluna-Koubou and Zollmen are keeping him alive, i wonder if the toys being released received any negative feedback? |

Wow, very astute eye Paul. They appear to be B-Clubs (or possibly vintage I guess, though there are some heavy silver sprays). Either way I would love to know more about him too. |

Has anyone got a good photo of the toy? Looks great. Ok, so since I posted this I went and watched that whole episode. At no point is the word radiation used. The aliens are basically vampire aliens, they even shun the sun...I don't see the connection to holocaust at all. There's no mention to replacing their own radioactive blood or any of that shit just that they love blood and they find out that kids blood is better than adult blood. Japanese anime was harsher back then than this episode. In fact what was funny was that they say "Why are we wasting our time on virginal young women when we could be drinking kids!" but it's not any worse than later episodes or even other super sentai shows at the time which have vampiric aliens or even vampires. That would make an awesome mini and a great parababy. Shame. |

I was overjoyed to see this on Amazon the other day. I've been waiting for Ultraseven on U.S. home video for over 20 years. I'm glad the wait is over! He was my favorite Ultraman toy as a kid, before I even saw any of the shows he was on. Oh, and maybe they'll sub those Ultra Q blu rays with the colorization, but I won't hold my breath. Bring Kanegon to America already! |

dropped to $29 today from ~$40-ish on amazon. it's still a s!f release, so hopefully the price drop is not indicative of a poorer quality/compression re-release we saw with the regular ultraman series. |
