I grew up with reruns of this and Macross.
I love them both, and this looks fun (plus I just eat all of this up), but that is just as a fan that wants a fix.
Critically, I do not know what are they gearing towards with this; stand alone, reboot, probably a series? The trailer gives some attempt at 'grandiose' that fans of the license do not need a reminder of, but newcomers will need a context. I also feel that the CGI is a bit on par with the final fantasy palettes. Dunno what to think about that.
Im not about to go and pass judgement on a movie based on a trailer, I just wish that it gets the love it deserves, even if it is bad. As a fan of it, I would love to see more movies and new series, I just also want them to honor the series.
