Okay, admittedly maybe us northern folk are more in love with it than other nations, but I completely love the Winter Olympics. I mean on an addiction level. Been up all night watching events, and I just saw the Dufour-Lapointe sisters win their two medals. So happy for them, what a great story. Though I confess I feel sad for the third sister, it is going to be hard as the two winners will always be remembered for this. Still, what a nice thing to happen for the Montreal locals. :)

Not to single out any country {cough}, but I really don't like it when athletes make the podium and are standing there like miserable f*#ks. I mean, come on, there are dozens of people who would be simply ecstatic to stand where you are. I am sure not performing as you would have liked is disappointing, but it's poor sportsmanship, doesn't show respect for your competitors, and does not reflect well on you.

Anyways, I foresee a tired month in my future. Can't wait for curling and hockey* to begin. Go Canada!

*Congrats to the women's team on their first win of course!

Whoo! Curling!!

I haven't been watching, as I don't get a TV signal anymore, but I've always enjoyed the Winter Games more.

Is there a website that streams video of the Olympics? I'm so out of touch Steve.

The CBC has the broadcast rights here, and a lot of the feeds for events are streaming live, or you can watch the recordings after too. It might be region-blocked, so you might need to fanagle an IP pathway.

Sportsnet also has coverage, but I don't have that channel, so I can't say what is available exactly. You can always try some of the live streaming sites. The quality is crap, but for some things you really want to see, like gold medal matches, it is better than nowt.

And, for your anti-homophobia viewing pleasure.

Never let it be said Canadians lack a sense of humour. :P

^ looked it up yesterday & pretty sure it starts the 11th. not sure if that's Sochi time or NBC's lame rebroadcast schedule.

According to the daily schedule, I think the round robin starts on the 10th in Sochi (9am) which would make it midnight [EST] the evening before locally (depending on your location of course).

Not to derail the thread, but, anybody seen Men with Brooms?

EDIT: I can't type today, apparently.

Of course! Not exactly high cinema, but it's a curling movie, you got to take it where you can get it. Hahah, pretty typical Canadian (rom)comedy film, whether you think that is a good thing or a bad thing; but hey, Paul Gross and Leslie Nielsen in a movie, with some Molly Parker thrown in? Why not.

But for another good taste of Canuck sporting culture, you need to check out Goon.

excited to see how our snow boys and girls do - we've got a fair few who are picked to do well, I think (new zealand).

I wish I understood curling... I really want to give it a go!

Now is a perfect time to start! :) The basics are not complicated at all, but the playing skill on the other hand....well, it is a lot more difficult than most give it credit for. NZ has some good contenders, I saw one of the athletes do well two days ago in the Slopestyle - great sport.

 Just saw this pic, and it made me laugh. Enjoyable movie. Jay Baruchel is pretty damn funny, and I got to appreciate his hometown love for Montréal and the Habs. If we are going to go back though, Strange Brew is required viewing for everyone.

Yep, Ultrakaiju's link up there is region-locked. For those of us who aren't too tech savvy, here's the official US retailer coverage of the games:

That takes me back! I used to have a tape of Bob & Doug's Great White North album that I would listen to on a very regular basis before bed when I was little.

Wait which did they get wrong; the country or the flag? I haven't been following the games yet, I'll need to play catch up.

For me personally, the olympics don't do anything. I just look at it as a 2 week turn around for my New Jersey Devils to start making some moves towards a playoff spot.

I watch the winter Olympics for the snowboarding halfpipe and big air downhill. The speed skating is pretty exciting too. Other than that its just kinda meh....
