...you realize just how many toys you actually have.

MY GOD, WHAT HAVE I DONE!?
Image

Mine were spread out through so many rooms on so many shelves and surfaces that I must have lost track. And packing? Trying to wrap each and every one in bubble wrap and make sure they're boxed optimally ... yikes, this is taking DAYS.

I just can't imagine what those of you with significantly larger collections than mine go through when moving. Major lesson learned: All this takes a LOT more time than anticipated.

Friend who just doesn't understand: "No big deal, just throw 'em in a box." Yeah, right.

Am I the only one that's wishing that you'd been taking pictures of all those little nooks as you were dismantling them? C'mon, Deanie - show us what you got!

OH, MOVING! Nothing funny about it.

Guess you missed my post Dean about moving just a week ago:

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=38012&start=1100

Yeah it was a pain in the fucking ass. Had to move 3000 records on top of the toys. Although disassembling the Expedit was easier than I thought. (not sure how reassembling will go). Right now I'm prepping my four detolfs for the move. Just realized last night that those glass shelves I wired over the summer for lightning with double sided tape are not going to stay put. So I'm having to go to each one and peel the lights off, scrape the tape, and pack the glass shelves.

The toys were surprisingly painless though. I just went to Target bought 5 large Rubbermaid bins (30gallon size) and what I did was use t-shirts I had to pack anyhow as buffers. So lay down two t-shirts place toys on top then lay down more t-shirts and keep stacking back an forth till you fill a tub. Nothing got scratched. No way I was going to individually wrap everything. If it had an antenna or horn I used a little bubble warp. Right now everything is lying in those tubs in my new chilly attic (but not too cold). I even keep going back up to open the tops briefly to let the vinyl off gassing escape so I get no weird discoloration. I'm a nerd.

I've had to endure my girlfriend screaming at me like a banshee every day because she refuses to get a Moving Truck till we are left with just the big stuff. My body is in so much pain because I'm doing all the lifting. We have this dolly system where we load a dolly up with heavy boxes stacked to the top. Then I have to hold the weight of the whole thing as I go down each step (3 flights of stairs). They say moving is the most traumatic thing in life you can experience besides death. Yeah I'd agree. I don't think I've fought with Kim this much the entire time I've known her. We start the day with a cry from the awful things we said to each other the day before and then just reload, repeat, rinse and spin...still moving as we speak.

I don't know why I stopped taking pictures. Probably because I wasn't keeping up with whatever was newest and hottest ... ain't no Nags 'round here. :D Kinda stuck to what I was already doing... OG RxH, Garga-fights, M1go, Blobs, Dream Rocket and such.

Maybe I'll pick up again once I'm settled, although given that I'll have less space, a lot of stuff is going into storage. I may sell some goodies, still thinking about it.

David Byrne when he was still a Talking Head, 1980. (Dating myself, I know...)

Lixx I did miss your post ... apologies for unnecessary second move thread. Very distracted as I'm sure you understand. Thanks for the anecdotes and well wishes folks.

Dean- no worries. Mine wasn't a new thread just a complaint in the F*ck You thread. I'm glad you started it. Nice to know I'm not the only one suffering through it right now. I love the Talking Heads post btw. I've actually caught myself humming that as a passenger in Kim's car, because she's been blasting x-mas music (which I loathe). I just keep telling myself...same as it every was, same as it ever was...

One trick I use to make moving less burdensome is use all your cloths as bubble wrap substitute you don't have to hunt down as much bubble wrap and you get to unpack 2 things in the time you would do one, the only down side is you have to set up displays and unpack toys before other stuff... because you know clean cloths are essential

Love this thread, I'm going to be doing a cross country move in the next few months and I'm dreading having to pack and move my toys. Rubbermaid bin and clothes to wrap are sounding like the way to go. Problem is that I'll be arriving before my boxes so I'll have to use my nonessential clothing like socks and underwear...

Last major move i did i used plastic bags (bags from toys, sandwich bags and grocery bags). yea it took a lil bit more time putting each toy in a bag but u have to pick them up and put em in the box anyway so its only one more 2-5sec step putting them in a bag along the way...also you can fit a hell of a lot of toys in one bin if they are all in bags, no padding taking up space, & if u pack em tight theres not much movement inside the bin itself. But all in all FUCK moving

This is ingenious. I actually did end up doing that with some kitchen wares.

Good luck. Moved from Queens to LA this summer and it was a pain in the ass with all my records + toys.

I went with the individual bubble wrap packing but using clothes sounds like a great idea. I was terrified that the movers were going to damage all the toys so I was pretty diligent about bubble wrapping - I recall someone here had a horror story with movers.

I think the worst part about packing everything away is that you have to find time/space to re-display everything. I'm sure that by the time I get a setup I like, I'll be movin again.

Not very reassuring. I'll be doing Brooklyn to the bay area. Can you recommend the movers you used?
I'm going to have to drive my car cross country and I'm thinking that I'll probably pack my toys in the car with me just to be safe. Plus I'm looking forward to photo ops with them along the way.
