I said this on Facebook a few days ago and it got mostly ignored - It sounds to me like Wilco wanted to make a mid-90's Sonic Youth record. I wasn't a Wilco fan to begin with, so I don't know how different it is from their earlier records, but that was my take on it. |

^^^^^ Hmmmmm, that's an interesting comparison. Will have to break out some old Youth discs and give them a listen. You're not a fan of Wilco or just haven't really listened to them before? They can be all over the place and prior to them losing their keyboardist a handful of years ago, they certainly weren't alien to using noise and obscure sounds in their material. However, this seems to be a bit more on the abstract noise / electric realm. Not against it. Just didn't expect it... It would appear however, that I am the only fan of Wilco on the boards ![]() |

Just wasn't a fan previously. I've tried several times to get into them, because as a lover of music I know I'm supposed to like them, but I just couldn't do it. I was the same way with The Smiths. It took me probably 20 years of trying to understand why there was any draw there at all before it finally clicked. |

First, Rush was amazing. Not sure I've really heard anything they've done since Counterparts. (Was that really 22 years ago???) Second, yeah I know there's no rules or anything, but Wilco was always one of those bands that people say, "WHAT? You don't listen to Wilco?? I thought you were into music!" I get the same reaction when I say I don't care for Ryan Adams / Bob Dylan / Spoon / lots of others. I'm all for people having their own tastes in everything, especially something as subjective as music. |

Sounds pretty typical... I fought Wilco for a long time only because my friend kept trying to pimp them on me so hard. I finally caved and went to a show and that sold me. Since then I have been a fan. I saw Ryan Adams recently as well and was not impressed with his live show. Pretty fucking boring to be honest. But he is a pretty talented songwriter and his work is all over the place. I guess a lot like Wilco. Both are pop bands/artists at the end of the day and there's a cohesion there no matter how much experimentation is involved. If I'm going to venture into the noise, experimental arena, I would never consider either. Instead I would be looking to John Zorn and the rest of the audio adventurists out there. |
