"The famed horror series 'Tales from the Crypt' is making a return to television after going off the air nearly 20 years ago, it was reported Thursday.

Writer and director M. Night Shyamalan, known for supernatural movies like 'The Sixth Sense' and 'Signs,' is producing a new version of the series for TNT — where it will lead a two-hour block of programing that includes other spooky short stories."

Thought this would be pretty cool to discuss, if anyone's interested, or hadn't heard. I'd gotten a lot of good scares from this series as a kid, and the Crypt Keeper was both hilarious and terrifying to me. I'm 50/50 on it, as I'm excited for the general return, but I'm also heavily worried about Shyamalan's writing. I've only ever been a fan of the aforementioned films. It's also concerning that it'll be on TNT versus HBO.

So minus the occasional boob slip that would be allowed on HBO, I think it'll be okay on TNT. What HBO was allowed to show back then, is pretty much okay on standard cable now. Look what AHS gets away with, you know? But with that being said, I feel like Mr. What a Twist is a major downer for this. If he is just forking out cash and other writers work on the shows? I am totally okay with it. If he writes, it'll be awful IMO. I know John Kassir has had a rough time vocally since the Crypt Keeper role, but if he is up to it, I hope he comes back. If not, again the show really just won't be worth it. Thanks for starting the thread, Robert!

Thought there'd be more enthusiasm for the series ressurection! You are right about basic cable getting away with more lately, though. And AHS is a great example of that. As it stands from what I've read, it looks like Shyamalan will be the only writer. Because of The Sixth Sense and Signs, I'm confident he can write something exciting and creepy, but I certainly wouldn't want the series to be about surprise endings. I'm also wondering who's gonna play The Crypt Keeper, if it won't Kassir(though, obviously, I hope it is).

I'd definitely check it out.

I still remember the one episode with Joe Pesci trying to swindle the twins. That was good ending.

I wonder if the gore would be upped too, due to today's standards? AHS had some nasty kills..more bloody, than gore, but still.

Ugghh pass! Shyamalan is one of the worst writers ever and I loathe his movies. Bring back Tales from the Darkside- which was way superior show to anything on Tales from the Crypt. Just my opinion.

Shyamalan is the WORST. Seriously the WORST. Also I heard there is no Cryptkeeper in this reboot. SHUT THE FUCK UP. You took out one of the only great things about this-Its a pass for me too.

Whoooooooa!!! No Crypt Keeper?! I hadn't read anything about that just yet!!! If that's true, I'm much less likely to give this a shot. I'm relatively easily entertained, though. So while Shyamalan's writing is mostly lackluster, mediocre at best to me, I'll still give somethin' a shot.

Lixx, I'm gonna have to agree with you there, dude. The intro was also a lot creepier to me as a kid. And the Creepshow style - esque movie still holds up extremely well to this day. I think I always found Tales a little more fun because of the aesthetic and the Keeper's humorus intros.

Ok, those were early reports (True that the Cryptkeeper we know and love belongs to HBO and is not licensed for this movie) but there will be SOME kind of Cryptkeeper in this---Still worried. haha.

WHEW. That's a pretty big relief. Kinda cool they're goin' the route of roots with the older, creepy white haired dude from the comics. Wondering how they're gonna take on his look and presenter personality, too. I'm definitely still worried, but it does sound pretty cool that it'll be a prolonging story over X amount of episodes. There were definitely a handful of stories I wished were longer in the original series. Thank you for the link to the article, Missy! :-D

To save costs, the cryptkeeper will be played by the same monster from Shamalamadingdong's The Happening.

Mark Wahlberg?

LOL, no the trees mixed in with a little invisible wind. So basically just cut to a tree blowing in the wind with a crypt keeper voice over and the effect is......

If they actually go EC Comics cryptkeeper, I would thoroughly enjoy that. But it still won't make up for the lack of Kassir and the shitty writing.

Trees and wind are cheap for production so I'm not surprised. After "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs" people lost faith in M. Night. I'm talking about "The Village", "The Happening", and the god aweful and totally inexcusable "Lady In The Water. Must have been painful for Bryce Dallas Howard in LITW since she comes from such an acting lineage started by her grandfather Rance, then Ron, and her family.

This.

You know as a kid I didn't have HBO so I didn't get into Tales from the crypt until an older age. I did however loved Twilight Zone, Tales from the Darkside, Night Gallery, Monsters, Friday the 13th the Series, Freddy's nightmares and anything else I could catch on late night tv.

^^ tales from the darkside is severely underrated. As is the outer limits. Rod Serling twilight zone is where it's at! I just watched "the hitch-hiker" last night.

Tales From The Crypt, Tales From The Darkside, and The Hitchhiker all conjure up fond memories. Twilight Zone and Night Gallery have always been a mainstay for me.

If you've ever wondered what would happen if The Twilight Zone twist was combined with a dystopian view of man and technology then check out the UK export series "Black Mirror" and be sure to view its Christmas Special episode.

I really enjoyed Black Mirror. I didn't know what to expect and thought it was great.

Glad to hear it Alex. Since it's a UK Import, many people aren't hip yet, but it has a solid underground following that's growing. And now that Netflix has it there will be more momentum moving it forward. Hell, Robert Downey Junior even optioned the "Entire History of You" episode to make a film. I was glad to hear that Charlie Brooker is hard at work creating the next season of Black Mirror. That's something fun to look forward to.

I just wanted more. I heard the BBC are about to announce their own streaming service. I'm not sure if this will help or hinder but I for one am excited to see non-torrented versions of This is England 86,88 and 90

Post subject:  Re: Return of 'Tales From the Crpyt'

Well, both Black Mirror and the This is England franchise are Channel 4 productions, not BBC, so there should be no conflict or benefit relating to the streaming venture.

What were we talking about again?
