A lot of the test shot protos from the POTF (Power of the Force) and other modern lines were made with neon and other funky colored plastic. Often you'll see protos with different colored limbs, because the factories used whatever colored plastic was available. There are quite a few modern (post 1995) protos out there. There's a rather famous Star Wars shop in a very out of the way location in Tokyo that has (or once had, not sure if they still do) a good number of protos for sale. The vintage proto market is really amazing. Aside from hard copies, test shots, and pieces from other stages of the production/development process, there are a lot of very interesting pieces. A couple of my favorites are from the 1978 12" line, including the unproduced Hoth Han:
For folks interested in delving deeper into that area, 12back.com is a treasure trove. Another is http://theswca.com/collectors.html (formally known as toysrgus.com) which was referred to above. Gus Lopez, the site creator, is one of the world's foremost authorities on vintage SW. The largest community of vintage collectors is at rebelscum.com. I used to be pretty heavily involved in SW before getting into vintage Takara and kaiju. |
