found this really amazing foundry over in Emeryville. they do amazing stuff. HUGE statues for parks and little things as well. Coll part is they let you go in the acid spray booths and screw around with your own patinations. should be fun. |

Sorry if this is off-topic but the brand new re-release of A Clockwork Orange on DVD is allegedly the first home video issue to get the original aspect ratio right, and is said to be the best-looking, best-sounding version yet. I haven't seen it yet but have viewed "2001" from the new Kubrick boxed set, and it's definitely the best home video version yet. Is it still officially banned in the UK? Oh man, I wonder what you're going to do to Reagan? |

xoconostle wrote: Is it still officially banned in the UK? Intresting question. (I remember for the longest time I had this grainy bootleg copy that someone had smuggled in from Amsterdam like some porno flick). The answer is apparently not. From Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Clockwork_Orange_(film) "BRITISH WITHDRAWAL In the United Kingdom, the sexual violence in the film was considered extreme. Furthermore, it was claimed that the film had inspired copycat behaviour. In March 1972, a prosecutor at a trial of a 14-year-old boy accused of the manslaughter of one of his classmates referred to A Clockwork Orange, telling the judge that the case had a macabre relevance to the film. The attacker, a boy age 16 from Bletchley, pleaded guilty after telling police that his friends had told him of the film "and the beating up of an old boy like this one"; defence counsel told the trial "the link between this crime and sensational literature, particularly A Clockwork Orange, is established beyond reasonable doubt". The press also blamed the influence of the film for a rape in which the attackers sang "Singin' in the Rain". Kubrick subsequently requested that Warner Brothers withdraw the film from UK distribution. At the time, it was widely believed that the copycat attacks were what led Kubrick to withdraw the film from distribution in the United Kingdom. However, in a television documentary made after Kubrick's death, his widow Christiane confirmed rumours that Kubrick had withdrawn A Clockwork Orange on police advice after threats were made against Kubrick and his family (the source of the threats was not discussed). That Warner Bros. acceded to Kubrick's request to withdraw the film is an indication of the remarkable relationship Kubrick had with the studio, particularly the executive Terry Semel. The ban was vigorously pursued during Kubrick's lifetime. One art house cinema that defied the ban in 1993, and was sued and lost, was the Scala cinema at Kings Cross, London, on the same premises as the present-day Scala nightclub. Unable to meet the cost of the defence, the cinema club was forced into receivership. Whatever the reason for the film's withdrawal, it could not easily be seen in the United Kingdom for some 27 years. The first VHS and DVD releases followed shortly after Kubrick's death (in 1999). It was also shown in many UK cinemas." |

Thanks Alice. Given that far more violent movies have shown in the UK, the lift on the ban was long overdue. I hate the "copycat" arguments about violence in movies. If you can't distinguish between art and what's okay in everyday life, then the problem is not with the art. Love Christiane Kubrick. Charming lady and a really good painter. |

I think clockwork orange is over-rated. It has it's moments, but I think it;s horribly dated over all, and definitely a poor dead horse continuously suffering the blows of a foolish hyped up audience. Maybe that's why I prefer the smoking Stalin, which somehow seems wittier. |

At the minute (of the original 74 DPP 'video nasty list) there is only 13 films still banned in the UK. Usually because they've not be re-submitted for classification. They're mostly a bit pants and not as gory as some of the stuff we see today. # The Beast in Heat (original title: La bestia in Calore) (Banned outright) # Blood rites (original title: The Ghastly Ones) (Banned outright) # Devil Hunter (original title: Il cacciatore di uomini) (Banned outright) # Fight For Your Life (Banned outright) # Forest of Fear (original title: Bloodeaters) (Banned outright) # Frozen Scream (Banned outright) # Gestapo's Last Orgy (original title: L'ultima orgia del III Reich) (Banned outright) # Late Night Trains (original title: L'ultimo treno della notte) (Banned outright) # Love Camp 7 (Banned outright) # Mardi Gras Massacre (Banned outright) # Nightmare Maker (Banned outright) # The Werewolf and the Yeti (original title: La Maldición de la bestia) (Banned outright) # Women Behind Bars (original French title: Des diamants pour l'enfer) (Banned outright) |
