Whoa… The holy grail ? Maybe that’s too strong – but we’ve heard so many rumors of an art toy by the incomprable Mark Ryden we were wondering if it would ever see the light of the day. But that day is here. Based on the painting of the same name, YHWH stands 16” tall (rotocast vinyl) , has three acrylic eyes and is slated for a mid-summer release from Long Gone John's Necessaries Toy Foundation. The first image of the new figure is this beautiful shot by Brian McCarty done for an upcoming issue of Hi-Fructose. The eyes in particular are stunning – love the ears too.

Speaking of Hi-Fructose, they posted an excellent piece on their blog about the making of YHWH with quotes from both Mark Ryden and Long Gone John. It made us smile to learn that Ryden’s son Jasper was finally the one to convince his father to make an art toy and also chose the character. On the subject of the long-rumored toy, Long Gone John explains that it’s been a three year struggle to get the toy made properly with results that satisfy Ryden’s understandably high standards. YHWH is currently in production after failed attempts at two previous facilities. In terms of editions, there will also be at least two limited editions – one white, one black (80 pieces each).

In more Ryden toy news, YHWH sculptor Dave Pressler will be revealing a step-by-step making-of process on his blog next week. Interestingly, the original plans called for a figure of the girl to accompany YHWH. Ryden eventually decided to focus solely on YHWH.

It's based on this painting...

I can't wait for this! That is if I can afford one!

I always imagined if Ryden released a toy it would be a furry plushie with a cute/creepy vinyl face. Not sure about this one, Being part of a compostion, it may not stand on it's own quite as well.

I'm with LASH on this one; I think referring to this as a "toy" is a bit of a stretch. To me , the word "toy" infers something you could interact with, not something you place in your house and stare at. Ryden's paintings are cool, but the "alternative artist moves into 3-D" trend is getting pretty old pretty quickly.

Maybe they mean "sex toy?" I'm gonna be right out about it, that's what it looks like, pardon my lewdness.

It just needs to be 2 feet longer and I see it as intensely insane coat rack....that would rock!!!!

*sigh*

Amazing what qualifies as a "toy" in this hobby these days.

You offer that thing to a 10-year-old...y'know...someone who plays with toys...and he or she'll look at you like you have sixteen heads. I tend to agree.

Don't understand either why it has to be marketed as a "toy" when it's more of a sculpture, but aside from that - I like it. I would like it even more if the eyes were moveable, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Guess I'll wait and see what the price tag says after all the botched attempts at producing this...

These toys already exist. Its what Ryden is inspired by. They were made by Rushton in the 50s. Here are some:

I have to say I'm incredibly disappointed by this. Ryden has created so many cool images (why not a Lincoln toy, or a vinyl steak or one of his classic figures of a girl)

This one is just dumb. And i usually love Long Gone John's toys and Mark Ryden's art. I had high hopes, but this thing sucks.

I completely agree with you.

For me, the ultimate ryden toy would be a toy playset based on the "butcher bunny" painting. A little girl with all kinds of weird rabbits and lincolns you can move around.plastic cleavers, fake meat, bees...

This is boring. If the ears shot out somehow, maybe...but this is just boring and designed with the art flipper in mind.

I'm kind of amazed. I thought it would get a better reaction here. I look at this in the same way you go to see a band play and they play what they feel is what they would want to hear. Although I know it's not always the crowd favorite. I think this is the figure that he wanted to see on his shelf.

Is it more sculptural then an articulated toy? Yes. Is it that much different from a Dokuwashi? Or how about a magic wand? Is that a toy?

apples and oranges. The doku has 5 points of articulation. Just saying.

Of all the things ryden could have done. I think this kind of blows.
but good for him. He will sell 500 im sure with no problem.

Oh in no way am I saying that the Doku isn't articulated just mainly referring to it's shape really. I just figured we liked bizarre things that don't really fit into any normal mold. That's all, oranges out.

I think the problem is defining it as a toy. Is it a toy that I would play with? Nah, to me it would sit in the corner and garner interesting glances from people at my house.
I'm not a big doku fan myself, but I agree with Alex. It has articulation, you can play with it, and it has some character.

Not to beat a dead horse here, but he has a LOT of options to pick from in his arsenal. A rad monkey, an ice cream truck playset, a santa worm vinyl would be rad...there are just so many things that could be done. I'll wait and see if more stuff comes in the future, this just leaves me a bit meh.

I still think it's pretty "meh" - but a lot of the posts seem to have overlooked why this "figure" was made.

This would have been great. Also something from the tree show or his newest show would have been my first choice. Although I think of ryden the way I think of kaws. He does what he wants on his terms. I can and do appreciate that.

I just won't be buying this "toy".

Definitely would have preferred something at least toy inspired. It's still nice as a sculpture but some kind of blend of toy and art like Biskup does could have been so much cooler. Unfortunately it doesn't sound like Ryden is very excited to do more vinyl in the future.

I saw a pic of the girl sculpted as well. Did that get scrapped? Or was the McCarty pic just of the one figure.

I actually kind of like this. Its weird and it doesn't really look like anything out there now. Plus, lots and lots of eyes, which are always a bonus for me. Would have been way cooler with the girl included, though. On its own, you lose perspective on what size its supposed to be.

Will I pick one up? Nah.

Also, if it took him 3 years to find a factory that could crank that out... he must either be ridiculously picky, or be going to some really bad factories.
