Been loving this since I saw it on rotofugi. Not sure if I'll get one yet or not though, there are so many toy releases right now. Plus the "prototype edition" leads me to think more will be made.

I dig SHAGS work and the toy is cool but I don't forsee myself ever buying one.

at any rate I thought the quote in the chicagoist article that kirby tweeted was funny...

"The toy runs at a steep $75, but for enthusiasts this is certainly reasonable."

yeah, it works for me. cartoon-like yet adult enough in subject matter that the original reference to shriners in their tiny cars would be lost on a child. in my opinion, a lot of western vinyl and its "appealing" attributes can be understood by a ten year old. not to say that ten years old have bad taste, but they do tend to eagerly consume massively-derivative content as if it were as valid as the original content that created whatever trend is being bought.

in other words, i'd almost buy it.

I'd be down for one if it were a remote controlled car.

I like this, but curious on the size.

According to VP: The medium-sized figure (6.25” tall, 7.25” long) features three-points of articulation (wrist and shoulder of beverage arm, neck/head).

I love it. I won't be picking it up, but I think it translated well from canvas to vinyl.

not big on Shag, but this toy looks pretty good...shriner's are always cool.

I did'nt really like Shag's other toys (Flank was too hip, pirates too Disney). I'm surprised they choose this image to make into toy and I think it's a cool idea. I'll try to get one.

Don't know if it's just the photos, but it looks more like cheap plastic than vinyl - the sort of thing you'd get at Target or Spencer's Gifts for five bucks. Too, while I love Shag's artwork (and the good people at Roto), there's something about Shag's design sensibility that doesn't translate exceptionally well to 3D.

I'll pile on my admiration for this toy. It looks great. I want one.

Thanks guys.

It is indeed vinyl...my lights were a little hot in these photos so it came off a little shiny.

The "Prototype: in the name refers really to two things....

1) It's the first release and from the master molds rather than duplicate molds so it'll be a little larger than the regular and subsequent releases

and

2) There's still a few things we want to correct paint and finish wise for the next releases. I'm really happy with how this project turned out, and we wanted to have a release for Shag's opening in our gallery but there's still room to make this a better figure.

Josh (Shag) was super cool to work with on this and I'm really hoping people love it so we can release some of the other color combos (and maybe even different characters) that we're hoping to do.

can I submit suggestions for characters? I own quite a bit of shag stuff and would love to see certain characters from past paintings and prints in vinyl form.

This guy is really great in my opinion. For anyone who has followed his work for any length of time, a toy shriner is absolutely perfect as it's such a continuous theme. I picked up the Black/Grey Flank a while back and the quality of it is pretty stellar, I'm sure the rotos did a great job with this one as well.

good luck with the show kirby. the print selection looks great...you got quite a few of the older (better) releases I noticed.

I'm hoping for a flocked jacket and hat version.

Author:  rotokirby [ Thu Feb 18, 2010 1:14 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: SHAG vinyl

To be honest, I hate flocking so I don't know if it will happen or not. So much can go wrong with flocked toys from both a manufacturing and a display standpoint.

That said, there's one version I have in mind that would look great with a flocked hat at least.

Longtime Shag fan...I have several prints hangin' in my home, including a huge one in the main room over the fireplace.

I think this rules, I hope it does well so more stuff comes out. I would like a Shag wolfman toy!

In hand this guy is killer. He doesn't really fit with anything else I own, but the wife saw it last night and we just had to have it. Shag was really cool and now mine has a martini hood ornament.

Yeah, I met him at ComicCon a few years back and he was super nice - did a sketch for some friends of mine who have a 50's-60's themed vinatge store and love his stuff. Wish I could afford one of the originals at the Roto show.

It's up now if anyone is looking for it. Picked it up. Was pretty impressed with the transition from 2d to 3d.
