The certificate is usually about $50 a year, so not too crazy. The challenge is getting someone technical to install it and ensure that it's actually working throughout the whole site, which might take some manual labor. It's up to the admins really. We don't necessarily need an SSL cert since sensitive info isn't shared here. It could break a lot of embedded photos too.

for the record you can get an SSL cert for free via Let's Encrypt (not shady, sponsored by the Internet Security Research Group). Actually installing the thing would be trickier. I can see a thread on the Xenforo forums with a guide, though.

I think the reason you saw this message is because of a recent update to Chrome...Are you using Chrome? It's always been unsecured but now you are just being warned basically. No need to fear really.

i switch from Chrome and Safari, but only use Safari here

Good luck with that. I heard they plan on finishing any remainder off and than discontinuing it for the rest of the year. Its been a real pain trying to even find one.

Rumor is they're discontinuing it and turning right around and putting the software onto the Switch.
