I still think this movie could go either way, and it hasn't won me over just yet, but GdT is saying some good things to soften my skepticism. Here he is on an episode of Q today, where he mentions that after the credits for the film he put in a dedication to Honda and Harryhausen. That is the kind of thing I can appreciate.

Guillermo Del Toro stops by Studio Q to discuss monsters and Pacific Rim

Just expect it to be stupid, noisy, shallow summer fare, and you'll probably end up loving it.

Of course, that's all I expected from Man of Steel, and absolutely hated it. But then, del Toro is a better filmmaker. ;)

Theres a great video floating around where he talks about how they designed the mecha and how yes theres inspiration from other sources but it was never discussed or talked about. If a designer used elements from another IP they just didnt share. All to keep the designs unique.
ill dig it up, its worth watching

Edit: i THINk this is it, cant watch it right now...

Man of Steel was a giant turd. However I feel like this movie is still gonna rule. Del Toro should do just fine..

Thats awesome! I used to do a lot of press kits for video games and we would do stuff like that. For example we did like 100 custom painted nerf guns made to look like The rifles in aliens for the Colonial Marine game, with custom stenciled rifle cases and a resin piece to mimic the clip

Well, just got back from the film.

I was a bit skeptical about this movie, worried that it wouldn't be done right, but personally, I don't know if anyone could have done it better.

Guillermo del Toro did an amazing job, paying a hell of a tribute to the Super Robot genre. While it would have been cool to see robots constructed in the vein of Go Nagai tearing up kaiju on the big screen, I think he did well trying to keep things as original as possible in the design department, shutting out all possible influences that could be traced back to the source.

My favorite aspect of the film:

The dual-pilot, neural network system required to man each Jaeger (robot). Some people here seemed skeptical on the idea, but I thought it was something original, and definitely no more farfetched of a science than something you'd read about in any manga which may have been an influence.

If you're on the fence about it, give it a shot. I don't think you'll be disappointed. ;)

I read a review of this movie that said it was a combination of
Godzilla, Clash of the Titans, Transformers, Iron Man, Aliens, Star Trek, Blade Runner, The Matrix, Star Wars, Innerspace, and Ultraman!

Not bad for a single movie...

Just caught it in 3D IMAX, totally loved it, strange sensation emerging back into the real world. I didn't want to leave the robot monster fights.
