Hello James! Thank you for explaining what's out there! I ended up holding off on buying any DVDs and Blu-Rays, because all the reviews on Amazon reflected exactly what you said, although you condensed everything beautifully, and it's much more straight forward than reading conflicting reviews. Well, that's discouraging :x :? :( I'm not torrent savvy, so I guess trying to find the originals to give as a gift is not possible :x Darn! :x Well I hope a decent release of the originals with at least some "good quality" is made available in the future. You would think with everyone clamoring for the original theater version, that it would be a good marketing strategy to make these available, sigh... :|

I was checking out Harmy's most recent version of SW a little earlier when my pop called me up. I realized that I wanted to tell him about it - SW was the first movie that he ever took me to in a theater, and we'd gone to see the special edition together 20 years later - but I didn't really want to deal with him not understanding what the point was, or him being dismissive about the whole idea of it. I remembered an article from a couple of years ago that explained the project pretty well, and had some interview snippets with Harmy himself, so I decided just to send him that. Funny thing is, the piece seems to have disappeared from the net, so I had to dig it up with Wayback Machine! Heh.

    Anyway, here it is:

    Nothing special, but worth preserving.

Thank you Tone! That is great news! :D Believe it or not, I signed up at the local public library to try to borrow the disks for my buddy. We are ~838-th on the waiting list! :x Good thing we aren't in any hurry

Hmmm... well I guess I'll eventually have to upgrade my TV then. Believe it or not, I only have one TV, and it's an old cathode ray tube monster (not big, just heavy!). It can still play DVDs, but I suppose to use a Blu Ray player, I'll have to get a HD TV. My friend already has a "new" TV. Ergh, I'm such a luddite! :)

Has anyone here been reading the new Marvel/Disney SW comics? ("Star Wars," "Darth Vader," and "Princess Leia.") All three take place in the zone between "Star Wars" and "The Empire Strikes Back," although you do see some creatures, droids, and places that were introduced in the prequels (but they don't make you cringe this time around.)

IMHO all three are excellent. Great art, good stories and action, very credible characterizations, appropriate balance of thrills, scares, and humor. A really good revival of the spirit of the original trilogy. Hopefully this bodes well for for the forthcoming movies now that The Mouse owns the franchise.

Radio Shack has a bunch of different types of audio/video converters. Picture may not be perfect, but its a lot cheaper than a new TV.

Jason Aaron is the man so I will be reading the Star Wars book, but I am trying not to pick up new singles so I will be waiting for trade.

Farts. Now there's 2 teasers? I'm super strict with avoiding trailers and info on movies that I'm super anxious about, so that means I have to start avoiding this thread and any time I'm in a movie theater I have to be ready to run out of the theater if a trailer comes on.

I vote we make this thread as spoiler-free as we possibly can - That would mean not even talking about what we see in the trailers. Is that asking too much?

Youre going to have avoid all media for another 6-7 months. You will see teasers. I say stick to the trailers but avoid all else.
This trailer had so many grown men I know in tears. Loved it.

^ Nope I'll be able to avoid them. I've been like this for years now. Never saw trailers for Interstellar, any of the Batman movies, Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ender's Game, etc. But it's unrealistic to expect the internet to help me avoid stuff. Actually now that I think about it, I'm not going to be able to go on Imgur anymore now that there's a new trailer out. Farts!

I don't watch trailers either, they basically just ruin the whole movie imo. They tend to get burned into my mind, so then during the moving Ill be waiting for the catchphrases and other moments from the trailer and can usually predict pacing if not actual plot elements. I'll only watch them for a movie I know I don't care if I see, and have never been convinced to change my mind from one.

I thought I was already excited with the first trailer, this one is even better.

Exactly! They give away too much, and I spend the whole movie going, "oh yeah that was in the trailer." I just want to sit and watch a movie and be surprised.

Didja notice how the shot of him peeking around a corner echoed one from '77 SW? 8)

Whew. I wasn't the only one then.

Id rather watch this on repeat for the entire runtime of episodes 1-3 than watch those again.

    YES!

Along with at least one of the edits...I cheered!

I've watched the trailer at least a couple dozen times today and I'm pumped!

    No way.

I thought it looked promising and i'm one of those people that completely wrote Star Wars off.
I was well over it, but i'm willing to give the franchise another chance now i've seen that trailer . . .

My main fear is that, given the iconic nature of the original trilogy and memories of standing in line with my dad to see the original 1977 release, that Hollywood will dumb the next batch down further like they are doing with the Marvel franchise . . . until they all blend into one generic phoned-in, over-CGI'd sci-fi action adventure!

It happened with 1-3 and I worry that the next batch could just take it further into the realm of mediocrity.

    I hope not!

I genuinely think the franchise is in good hands with JJ. I think as a Star Wars fan himself he's been through the ringer with Lucas' nonsense just as much as we have. He's made a commitment to building sets and props too, plus both trailers have nearly had me crying. I'm feeling positive about it all.

Plus the Star Trek reboots had plenty of CGI, and they turned out fine
