Been working on a project for the past few months - started way back in maybe in July 2019. I had a lunch with a friend named Shayne who works as a writer (mainly for film/tv and some novels) and we got to talking about comics and movies and the coming collapse of society. Anyway he threw some ideas at me and one of them immediately scratched an itch, a character named Horaman. Inspired by Ultraman and Power Rangers with some dark Alan Moore-ish (we hope!) undertones. Shayne wrote up a short script for a 5 page comic which was supposed to be a short entry for an anthology, which I blew up into a 20 page stand-alone first issue. It just so happened that my shoulder exploded during tennis practice in September so the last part of 2019 was spent at the drawing board most nights after work producing these pages. Here's a short excerpt as a teaser for you guys on Skullbrain - it's about as much as I can show without revealing too much! If the following pages manage to capture your attention, feel free to grab the full book at https://badteethcomics.bigcartel.com/ - and we would love to hear any of your thoughts from this little preview in the thread this first issue is more of a big set-up for a more involved story in upcoming issues. And there may be a toy in the works but it's early days on that one.. as far as toys go for now, there are some fun ads throughout the book for a few sofubi friends in this issue! Anyway, hope you guys enjoy reading the following pages!
Interesting work, Glenn. My favourite part is definitely that opening title page. Incredibly class text work, and great line art on that helmet panel, too. The Amapro nod is a cool inclusion.
Thanks - tried to get that 80's Marvel look and then a shift into more of a manga tone for the main story. There are some pretty fun ads in there - Cometdebris, Sour Lemon,Cartoonist Kayfabe and of course Pachi Pins Thanks! Hmmm hopefully in a few weeks? Would definitely be cool to see it on their Cartoonist Kayfabe channel.. I'll try and film a flip-through video on my channel as well.
Made a little motion comic trailer with my limited knowledge of Windows Movie Maker and the license-free music and sound fx on Youtube.. worked out pretty well I think! PS after some fucking around with Bigcartel and Paypal, copies of the comic are now readily available!
First pack in the Kayfabe mail bag video for this week was outta Australia; I was holding my breath that it was yours... ah well. Familiar with Nathan Rixti? My first sight of his quality apery.
Oh I wish mail was that quick.. might be a couple of weeks before Horaman appears on the channel and the guys are bewildered by the Amapro, Cometdebris, etc advertisements in there. Nathan Rixti looks pretty cool.. similar to Alex Zirritt kinda stuff right? Gonna check out today's CK videos after lunch.. sent out a bunch of copies today with Hedoro kaiju stamp action on the envelopes! View this post on Instagram
Thanks @3wing and @ButcherBrand ! Starting up a new project today while in lockdown.. hope you guys have been drawing a bunch too!
Super nerdy stuff here but Richard Friend (inker of Batman, Superman, Gen13, Wildcats etc) ran through the first issue and gave a solid 30 minute critique. Some really interesting advice here for anyone that's interested in comics as a storytelling medium:
^^ I didn't want to see too many spoilers so I only watched some of it, but he was pointing out some good stuff. Must be cool to have a professional critique your work so thoroughly ... I like the way he was doing it onscreen so he could flip panels etc, as he talks.
This guy knows his stuff for sure @The Moog - his channel is well worth checking out. Maybe not as polished as Cartoonist Kayfabe but just as substantial in comics content!
Richard Friend is a BEAST of an inker! I met him once at Long Beach Comic Con around 2011, browsed his pages and talked to him about inking for a good while. He was super friendly and open about his technique. It’s rad he did this for you, Glen! Like @The Moog , I don’t want to see your pages in the critique first, So I’ll wait for the copy of Horaman #1 I just ordered before I finish watching.
Good thinking.. That's one thing I didn't consider when he did this video was that now 'spoilers' are out there! It's a pretty mind-shattering conclusion for sure.. it gives The Sixth Sense a run for it's money haha thanks for picking up a copy! I will ship it out on Monday
Hopefully just slow transit - I think nobody in the USA who bought a copy has received it yet, on either coast. I pretty sure I was banned (surprised?) from their youtube account for mouthing-off about how their Akira episodes were basically storytime for children "and then this happened.. and then this happened.." and that I expected more of a deep dive into Otomo's artwork. Never was allowed to comment on their vids after that.. so maybe they remember me and aren't gonna show it on screen
Maybe this was your big moment then! Couldn't help but think of your story when I heard Ed's comment a few week ago, heh.
You know what I thought that as well! But maybe that's a little narcissistic on my part.. possibly paranoid! I did notice however when they flipped back in the Wizerd Truman interview they grabbed an extra page ahead to skip the Horaman ad as well I better not let them know that I am a comicsgater as well (I'm joking) - I actually had no idea what that was until I looked into the guy that Ed has beef with and has been taking jabs at the past few weeks. In reality it looks like the comics are finally landing in USA so maybe next week it might turn up..
