Okay, if you are gonna do a “Stripe” variation at least paint it to look like the Stripe mogwai instead of just Gizmo with added hair.

I'd agree with all of this. The part where I get really lost is when things don't make it here and have a lot of hype elsewhere. I don't see much of a difference between a few of the above and the MVH stuff just posted in that thread. Eye of the beholder and all that I suppose.

But one maker was kind enough to advertise "Lottery Start!". You know, giving the fans a heads up. If that doesn't show professionalism, respect for the toy community and general good will, what does?

Yep, it's very simple, Rich earned the popularity his toys have achieved. A lot of these new makers started off by copying him, and have not paid their dues (apart from maybe, Frank Mysterio). Most of them also don't hold a candle to his skills as a sculptor and painter. To me it's night and day, but as you say ... eye of the beholder.

Interesting, I didn't realize he started the style/genre. I would agree that his paints are certainly better than 99% of stuff I see in the style.

The super detailed style just isn't for me, but certainly happy to have context.

I'm not sure what you mean. What style? My point was, MVH isn't fugly (most of the time). IMO ... which is the whole point ... eye of the beholder.

I don't think this thread is preoccupied with any 'style'. Anything can be fugly.

And when I said 'copying', I meant they ripped off the best parts of his toys for themselves, not his overall style.

Got to admit though, an overwhelming amount of toys posted here are rotting/zombies/gore. I do feel like a lot of these fugly makers saw MVH's success and said "I'm going to try and copy THAT." OR "I'm going to try and make something MoRe ExTrEmE!" They definitely don't have the clout and relationships within the community that Rich has. Rich worked for it. Even if someone doesn't like Rich's work, you can't deny his skill as a sculptor and painter. These get-popular-and-profitable-quick makers don't have that experience that only comes from years of work.

Basically what hellointerloper said above. I didn't know that his work is where all the rotting/zombies/gore stuff derived from. I really like his stuff like Sampson and Lash, but his stuff akin to the Flying Freaks or Leviathan are more the style I was referring to.

And I'm not trying to beat up on the work of a very artist, just genuinely curious where the line is drawn between fugly and not fugly. Also, not sure if it originated with him or not, but I really dig the addition of the chains and ropes to some of the pieces. I certainly recognize the artistry.

Hype. There’s some shit that gets intense attention that if some considerably “no name” artist released it no one would give a shit. But because it’s got the name and social status of double taps behind it it’s perceived as valuable and good. In my honest opinion, there’s virtually no discernible difference between a Nag and a Six Eye Truman, but only one carries the socially accepted dollar value of being worth more than a general mortgage payment. In the same vein, if the “right” artist paints toys that are generally considered or looked at as bad(or having little to no attention), having that touch suddenly makes it desirable to own, which I find maddening and telling.

I think a lot of the fugly we can all agree on, but with makers like Frank Mysterio and MVH there are nuances. MVH didn't originate the gore angle, but his success was something people took notice of, and then copied certain aspects of his style, certain details. I post stuff in this thread that people often disagree with, it's not clear cut what fugly is. Also, a large proportion of what I post is expensive, so that adds to the fugliness, for me!

I wonder who sees more penises, a toy collector or a doctor?

    yeah, tough question.

I like a lot of his Aztec type toys too. I think it's much more representative of his original style. The lumpy stuff was him jumping on the Nag wave, and it worked. He's sold a ton of them.
