I grew up in Queens, NY (argueably the pizza capital of the world) and out motto was, If God wanted Pizza to come with toppings...
My favorite pizza usually has lots of sauce (the sauce makes the pizza in my opinion), a nice layer of cheese (not too thin, not extra), pepperoni, mushrooms and sausage! MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmhmmmm!
Interesting that the Two Boots menu lists a 'Central Grocery Po'Boy.' Central Grocery is in New Orleans, and their famous specialty sandwich is actually called a muffelatta (not a po'boy). Soppressata, yummmm. As for pizza, I understand that toppings other than pepperoni are available ... but, like Girl Scout cookies that are not Thin Mints, I just don't know why they bother.
I recently had a tasty calzone with meatballs, pepperoni's, feta, and mushrooms that was the bizomb...!!! Washed it down with some Turbo Dog ale and left happier than pig in slop... Cappy's Pizza in Tampa totally rocks...!!!
Best Pizzas IMHO: -SF: Tomasso's -NYC: John's (East Village) -NY: DiFara (Brooklyn) -NY, Queens: Rose & Joe's (Sicilian style) -New Haven, CT: Sally's -Boston: Pizzeria Regina -Chicago: (tie) original Gino's/Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder Definitely not a comprehensive list, but a good start.
since moving here Ive been in love with zacharys. I prefer the deep over the thin. I dont even like deep dish but its the best every. Ive also had lanesplitters, which was pretty good. But can you locals give me some must haves in the city?
Well you hit New Haven on the nail ! Its nice living a block away from there and its where I'm eating tonight ! And all you people put wayyyyyyyyyy to much garbage on your pizza. It must be an east coast vs. west coast thing as the east would NEVER add half the toppings mentioned.
Never heard of it, but will keep it in mind. I've also heard that New World Brewery has some killer pizza, but I have never had theirs either.
New World has the best beer selection of all time...!!! Just went there the other night in fact... I've never tried the pizza before cause' it's more of a place to guzzle the motor oil than to stop by for a bite... New York New York down in Ybor serves up a mean white florentine pizza with fresh tomato spinach and garlic... kick it with a nice marina for dipping the crust and get your grub on...!!!
i'ma deluxe type of guy. but green peppers, red peppers, & onions are the perfect trio on any food, including cereal. so those be my picks
It's funny that you were at New World the other night, because I was at NYNY eating that exact same Florentine pizza on Friday night. That shit was delicious.
Damn, I haven't scarfed down a NY NY Florentine pie in forever plus a day... me and the little lady might have to roll down there for one very soon... we should meet up there sometime have a beer and talk about opening up the next kaiju kingdom and task force agency...
Regina's? Oh it's ok...but I can think of a few others that are way better If you like a thinner crust, we went to Emma's in Cambridge a couple of weeks ago and it was the best pie I've had in a while. Also try Cambridge 1 in Harvard Square. They own Miracle of Science and Audubon and make a great pie. And I'm not slagging Regina's, they do consistently make a good slice..and the crust is usually perfect.
My roomate got a Pizza stone for Christmas and basically there's no sense in ordering out for Pizza anymore. The stone heats up and bakes the dough perfectly even. Even better that Trader Joe's has fresh 99 cent Pizza dough. Last night I made pesto, sun dried tomato, hot sausage, fetta, olive, Parmigano reggiano. Oh man, you can't get Pizza that good from anywhere here and it's fun to make too.
