Checked out Videodrome for the first time tonight. I liked the last 30 minutes a lot more than the first 60 so it was worth watching. Cronenberg sure loves griming up human replicas, but I guess I prefer surreal gore even more over the top like Dead Alive. The psychological element was pretty well done though.
Horrors of Malformed Men is one of my all time favourites. You can just sit there making a list of films that it's influenced. Great stuff.
Watching this tonight. 1-3 are pretty great. Haven't seen the rest of the series though. I always remember begging my parents to buy me the Puppet movie scale replicas that they'd show during the Full Moon previews at the beginning of movies. I wanted Blade and Pinhead so bad.
The series takes a huge nosedive after 3. I wouldn't even bother, really. Full Moon was so awesome for a brief period of time.
Seeing In the Mouth of Madness (which I've still never seen!) mentioned reminded me to dig out my favorite Sam Neill movie, Possession, which in turn reminded me of how much I like Isabelle Adjani, naturally leading me to tonight's oogy double-feature... Andrzej Zulawski's Posession ('81) and Werner Herzog's Nosferatu ('79) ...which bounced me happily back to the first film I mentioned in this thread Roman Polanski's The Tenant ('76) Freaky biz.
Did you notice Clint Eastwood as the nerdy lab guy? That always cracks me up. Started my Halloween movies last night w/ 2 great ones from the 70's: Dr. Phibes & Tales From the Crypt (the British movie - not the TV show).
Possession is gloriously insane. Had you seen it before? For as many times as I've seen the Adjani movies I mentioned above it hadn't occurred to me to think of her as a 'scream queen' until I grouped them together here.
Yeah someone sent me a copy a couple years ago, it was a mindblower. last few days I've watched Popcorn, I saw the Devil (thanks to Deadboy for shouting it out!), Halloween 3: Season of the Witch, and last night, The Nesting.
Hey so i want to watch something kinda liked freaked or nightbreed. Good Make up effects lots of crazy characters not to serious has a bit of a fun spin to it... like Bad Taste but not cause i watched that last night... i keep watching standard horror flicks and then wanting to watch weird of the cusp stuff after.
oh fuck Neon Maniacs is ridiculous. I think Demons is pretty fun to, and maybe Graveyard Disturbance. And Night of the Demons Original and remake! It's got fat coked out Edward Furlong in it! On a side note does anyone else think that fat coked out Edward Furlong bears a striking resemblance to the dead body in Stand by Me?
i didnt read the post till afteri looked at the picture and thought "when was edward furlong a dead body recently" lmao
I hear ya! I loved the first two movies. Nightbreed is a great flick. I disliked it the first time I saw it. But something drew me back to watch it again a few years later, and then again, and again... I love this movie now. I don't think anyone here mentioned Phantasm or Hellraiser - classics. The first few in each series are great.
Hosting a screening of Hausu tonight in Winooski! Projecting it in HD from the Criterion Blu-Ray; trailer reeler and two shorts ("Whim Grinder", the Woodring/Frank short, and the "Ghosts" module of Look Around You); charity raffle for the Hausu poster and a $25 Criterion gift certificate; live music; costumes; fresh hot Japanese snacks cooked up by my super-talented chef buddy Richard Witting (ah, he just emailed me the menu: okonomiyaki with optional octopus skewer; sweet agar cubes with purple yams; midori candied apples; roasted chestnuts)... and it's at the Moose Lodge, where the drinks are super-cheap! On the off, off, off-chance that there is some registered 'brainer in this area that I don't know about... mention your sb handle and get in FREE, and get a FREE raffle ticket!
Any Italian gore fans here? Stuff like Fulci's 'The City of The Dead' (Paura nella città dei morti viventi) or D'Amato's 'Beyond The Darkness' (Buio Omega)?
