Hey farts, and I say that lovingly.
Yes I have dared to coexist on these boards before, and like dealing with most of the internet, or the sea, have taken my hits and learned from them.
Thanks so much for the enthusiasm for my junk, as a nerd, its nice when other nerds say good job. This wood idol project I'm on is grand and scary. Its an intimidating thing putting my own barf on characters I love and sticking it out there as an occupation, but thats kinda art in general. Ugh, dont feel bad for me. I'm insanely lucky. I work my ass off for it, but so much of this industry is luck and Im not blind to that.
Heres the thing skullbrainologists, since we're all chatting I'd like to raise a discussion, where are the girls? Japanese kaiju, vinyl, sofubi, whatever.. where are they? If you're thinking of 1 or 2 examples thats clearly a bad sign. I see a hole. Eek, sorry I see a wall.
Theres a boys club in the designer vinyl toy world, and if a girl breaks through thats the exception, not the rule.
I made this stupid resin before... (I refer to most of my junk in this way)... a girl with a gun and called it kaiju. I guess I should have explained it a bit. It was in direct response to the massive wall I get all the time, as an artist, or in life or whatever. I guess I was trying to say that you dont know what a monster looks like, and judging on appearances is not wise. I figured out a smarter way of working it by making posters for girls. Supportive, empowering (hate that word) art to cure from the root not the leaves. Blah blah blah me. Least favorite subject.
I guess my point is we live in the future, and you guys have a huge voice. We all do. What you choose to support or beat down actually has an impact, people read this junk. Your words and dollars tell others how to use theirs. You can use your powers for good or evil. Personally, I try to do a little of both.
Thanks again for real for even having a conversation involving my junk, and for thinking about this post.

***So also its election day, I voted, whatever... Checker at the grocery store told me she gets butterflies seeing "I voted" stickers on girls. Suddenly made it feel important to me more than actual voting. She called it "Taking care of business."

you have your own unique style, which certainly works well with the one off wood cuts.... but at the end of the day, poopicorns do nothing for me regardless of what accessories an artist is or isn't equipped with out of the box. I would say Ayako Takagi, Junko Mizuno, Aya from Refreshment, etc are exceptional artists, not exceptions per se, and I have not seen anything in print where they complain about an old boys club holding back their work. If you feel that its your mission to break down walls, whether real or imagined, best of luck.

Maybe if you were actually engaged in this community, you would know.

For reference, the discussion thread regarding Amanda's resin figure:

    viewtopic.php?f=6&t=35788

    As for this, Amanda:

I stand by my assessment from a couple of years ago:

Again, personal perspective, your mileage may vary, but I think it boils down the fact that girls and boys just don't always like the same things. Food, clothes, sports, music, politicians, etc., there's always some sort of gender divide in evidence when these are being consumed. Maybe it's societal, or biological, or a mix of both that causes this. I don't think we'll ever know.

Outside of Skullbrain, I've met a few women who collect this stuff, not many, but some. Every once in a while someone favorites my toy photos on Flickr, and I would say at least 25 to 35 percent of those users that identify their gender turn out to be female. When I sell things on eBay, a lot of the Paypal addresses have women's names, but that could be guys using their mom's or sister's or girlfriend's bank accounts.

Who knows, there could be many more women on this BBS than we suspect, and we'd never know because this isn't Facebook, it's a BBS where everyone is just nicknames and avatars and posts gushing about our favorite monster toys. I think most people probably don't care either way, and that it's never occurred to them to think about it. And I like that idea, I think it's pretty cool.

Lovely sculptures, annoying discussion and vomitose justifications and counter justifications. Makes me want to go out and carve me a big wioden Kanegon for the yard.

^ Yeah, why engage in discourse on a forum... Seriously? I don't have to agree with everything someone has to say to appreciate that they took the time to both explore a topic and express an opinion in a fashion that's more in depth than taking a dump in public or just a pithy smoke blow. There are plenty of places to go around here if you're against the paragraph.

I can't say that I'm a fan of everything that I've seen of Ms. Visell's junk but, as one of a legion of males that's enthusiastic about made-up monsters, I will admit that it's difficult not have at least a tiny crush on a woman that's spent some of her free time carving up a yard-art Naronga.

I am all for lengthy discussions in which people go all out and aren't scared or bullied/peere-pressured into avoiding stepping on anyones toes at all costs. Not enough of that on here at all.

It wasn't the discussion or the large paragraph that bothered me , it just was that the whole boys club not a boys club discussion made me want to barf. People got annoyed at Amanda because she showed up and started hawking stuff on her first post, not because she was a woman. And the dudes who try to deny this place being pretty much a boys club don't have much better arguments.

You can return to your hall monitor duties now... :?

I always thought it was very straight forward, like Roger said. More guys like these toys, more guys make up for the higher numbers in artists, forum members, buyers, comments, etc...

I think women are welcome here. And just like any member: male, female or transgendered-albino-bisexuals, you'll need a thick skin because this is a faceless forum and people can pretty much say whatever they want.

And coming back to the real topic here, I'm liking this wooden sculpts. Is there a group shot somewhere?

yeah, its all fun and games until KR announces a Godzilla line.

I really dont care about AV toys, but they do look like not a lot of work. compared with other sculpts around here, i mean.
