Having a newborn daughter, my wife is worried she will find some of the toys scary when she’s a little older. She herself has arachnophobia and is especially worried about spider toys like Kumon. Even though I have Karz Works figures on display that are literally high detailed demons. Did your kids ever have any negative reactions to any of your toys?
I have three kids, 2 boys (10, 7) and my daughter is 6. When they were way younger they would get a little creeped by the more grotesque and evil toys but nothing ever gave them nightmares or made them afraid to go into the “collection” room. There were a couple toys that I decided to just put away cause I thought they were a bit too much (kaiju tan pig man, he didn’t last too long). I found that letting them handle and play with the toys made them more comfortable around my collection as a whole. The real problem is when they decide that your stuff is now their stuff. My daughter has a dedicated shelf full of Rampage unicorns and cadaver kids and my blank Gobo King hasn’t left my sons room since I got it. It’s annoying and heart warming at the same time
Might be for the best...then she'll stay away from your collection! Haha There's many young children in my family and none have had a negative reaction to seeing my collection. My niece recently saw my collection at about 10 months old and she was just mesmerized by all the colors and shapes. I have all sorts of unusual monster and bug toys, also some demonic looking stuff too. Kids are naturally curious. Be careful with the whole arachnophobia thing because kids can absolutely learn fear. I'm sure she'll be fine but if it doesn't go well you can easily box 'em up and sell.
Ha, I can’t tell you how many pictures I’ve got of kids playing with and loving Cadaver Kids, they must not grasp the theme.
I've had little kids come to visit, and IMHO, Buta, Amapro (the foodie stuff esp.), and most Grumble Toy and Elegab are kiddie friendly Uglydolls are definitely kid friendly
I have a 3.5 year old daughter. The least scary thing I own are these toys we collect. I have 46 full size halloween masks. She's grown up around all of this and never thought they were anything but normal. She's turning out to be a really cool little monster kid. Good luck with yours and congratulations!
I don’t have kids of my own, but I have 13 nephews and nieces in lots of varying ages that have visited with family and seen my collection. It’s a mixed bag where they’ll love some and be creeped out by others. Funnily enough, the grotesque toys aren’t the ones that bother ‘em, but rather the bigger monsters like Target Earth, Hukkokudo or my Secret Base Deka Bee. They enjoy Cadaver Kids ‘cause of the big smile, Boss Carrion ‘cause it’s a recognizable animal and attractive colors, and fight figures ‘cause they’re more akin to smaller, play sizes figures for them. The 16 and older ones, though, either think it’s weird or psychotically cool.
My daughter is almost 9. She has literally grown up around the collection. I would let her play with whatever was unpainted no problem. I even brought her in on the fun by anything unpainted pink coming in would be considered hers and she has her own shelf. She has never woken up and came in saying shes had a nightmare. She also hasn't had any real interest to watch scary movies, so I think this helps. I also feel since she grew up around the room full of skull and bones toys, that she didnt really have a chance to be afraid of it as it was always around. I feel at some point she might get a interest for scary movies and if that day comes... then we will deal with it. I on the other hand grew up watching alfred hitchcock and B grade horror. so I believed in a lot of it when i was younger than her. hehe
My kids could care less at this point. I mean I’ve had them their whole life (boy 15, girl 11) so they’ve never known any other way other than having a large collection where they live. I honestly think they don’t like them basically because when their friends come over they ogle the collection and have a ton of questions.
i have 2 boys 7 and 11. they don't care, all they say is "that's dads stuff- don't touch it" to everyone that comes over
I have a 2 year old son, he’s learned to open the toy cabinet by turning the key. He’s always been so careful when he lifts stuff out. I let him play with all of it. He’s broken a few vintage robots by accident as the plastic’s become a bit brittle, but we’re only alive once so what does it matter. Seeing his joy outweighs my love for my own collection.
I don’t have kids, but my friends visit me with their kids. My friends’ kids love my collection and make a beeline straight for the shelves when they visit. Cometdebris and Refreshment Toy seem to be their faves. My friend is scandalised when her kid plays with my Sunguts Suiko figures though
Ive got a two year old and two six year olds. They are sort of indifferent to them for the most part. My two year old likes playing with Medama -Oyaji and the Mothra fairies (pretends they are two mommies with a baby). She does HATE Gaira (war of the gargantuas) though.
I don't have any kids but my nephews were fascinated by my collection when they were younger. They both seemed to be obsessed with one toy in particular - Zombi Chu-Ziiiii. I have no idea why that toy out of all the others, but that was the one they always focused on the most.
Exact same here. I leave my unpainted toys on the bottom shelf for them to mess around with if they want. But, one of my kid's friends who's 9 is SO into the toys. He totally gets it and asks me all kinds of great questions about production runs and the artists. I ended up giving him a Kara from Grody for Christmas and he absolutely cherises it, has it on display and won't let anyone touch it.
I have two kids, 11 and 7. My 11 year old daughter is unfazed by the collection, and not very interested in it. My 7 year old son is very interested in it. He asked to have a shelf put up in his room for him to display his collection (which is comprised of cheap Bandai figures and cheap GID figures that 'brainers have hooked me up with). @trueadrn - the vendor bots I got from you a while back ended up getting claimed by him, and he made them all mixed parts.
Twin boys aged 11, they’ve grown up around my collection and never had an issue. Their favourite figures at first were rose vampires. One has his own little collection of smoguns and the other one is more interested in paint apps, especially gory ones!
I'm more than a little concerned with the lack of brainwashing shown on this thread... where are the comments like: "my kids have been given gifts of vinyl since they were old enough to grasp them in their food stained hands", "the only issue I have is that my child goes to school and is bullied because they have a faint vinyl smell about them" or "is it unreasonable to report your kids to the police for theft because they have removed bits of your collection and put it in their bedroom?" NOT ENOUGH indoctrination on this thread! I've a 10-year old and 16-year old. Son is Godzilla mad, so anything Godzilla he loves and therefore, in the past few years he has specifically asked for inexpensive Godzilla figures (the Hyper Hobbies GID Goji being his current favourite). 16-year old daughter is very creative and has been interested in Japan for as long as I can remember; therefore, when I introduced her to sofubi the combination of the art and Japanese influence made it instantly appealing. Personally, I don't have any grotesque pieces of vinyl but I do have plenty of interesting and quirky non-sofubi pieces and both have grown up around them. The only thing that has ever caused a small issue were some traditional wooden masks I have: one that is more or less 'the devil' and the second being a traditional Krampus mask. Both are in the TV room and my daughter went through a phase where she would ask me to remove them if her and her friends were watching horror movies As I weaned them both on a diet of The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Corpse Bride and the original Universal Monster movies, I've quite possibly desensitised them and created a need for tons of therapy later in life! One thing you do learn quite quickly with children is that the things you think will scare them often don't, where as the things you wouldn't expect to are the things that cause bad dreams or inquisitive conversations. I recall watching an episode of Garfield (in the 1980s) with one of my younger brothers and there was a panther in it. To me it seemed pretty innocuous but he was petrified by it. I've had similar things with my children, even with Scooby Doo when my son was younger. Back to sofubi, I enjoy the fact my daughter enjoys it and has her own small collection. It is yet another topic we can bond over and the only issue I ever have is that she gets quite territorial the moment my son mentions an interest in anything other than Godzilla. Lastly, if you hear of a mysterious accident befalling a European collector, please ask the authorities to consider checking the alibis of his children...
I don't have kids, but I lived with my brother, his wife, and his son for a few years. The only toys that scared my nephew were ones with animatronic features. If it could move and talk on its own, it freaked him out. He was fine if you put it away, though. Anyway, I haven't seen anything with electronic features in the ugly toys thread (yet), so you're probably safe on this front.
My younger stepbrother had one these glazed eyed monsters... he freaked me out in the 80s and I'm still not keen 40-years on!
