I like that he has.. Spikes.. but in all seriousness he looks rad. A solid new release from one of the best artists in the sofubi scene!
I know it’s probably not an influence but the creases through the body and limbs and the overall shape triggers feelings of the Target Earth Bagun as well, which is probably why I like this one so much. I like the much more intimidating overall feel of this.
@JoeMan I can definitely see it. In the chest pecs and arm/leg creases especially. Now that you’ve pointed it out I’d really like to see a forward facing shot to compare the two.
I'm excited to see another creature added to the lineup! This fella has some proper CHONKY legs. Not going to lie - I was thinking the next up would be the robot or alien featured on the big Godesu bags so this is a pleasant surprise. @djkemp Is it bad that I'm also itching to see the mini version?
So it’s fun to speculate what the influences are with newly released figures-it’s one of my favorite parts about this hobby in fact. Someone on IG mentioned Gigara has a strong resemblance to Pagos yesterday, I think they were dead on. Neronga as well. Definitely other influences there, and the back on Gigara is amazing But I do feel Lenny’s influences tend to be pretty Bullmark/Tsubu/Toho centric to date. Just my humble opinion though. It’s all speculation, that’s what makes it so fun.
I think it was me. It was my lame attempt to draw the attention of the maker. Neronga as well you're right.
I’d say more Pagos than Neronga. It’s actually pretty rad that so many different kaiju have been mentioned here so far, just from lookin’ at an artist’s, single new toy. Just goes to show how deep people’s appreciation for these creatures goes and how much of their favorites they see in Gigara!
Yep, I think it's testament to the design that five different collectors see five different sets of influences in it. Shows an appreciation for design language instead of the copying with modification or total reimaginings we often see. "This is just kaiju" indeed.
So Gigara is fucking great. After seeing in-hand photos land online, I noticed the toy looks quite different depending on the viewing angle and wondered if I'd like it in-hand. Doubts crushed; Spectrum Lab delivered with stellar production quality and some very neat details tucked away. Pics soon.
I saw that it came with a booklet with various drawings of dinos and kaiju and thought that it was such a fun little goody to add.
GIGARA!!! I really am lovin’ Spectrum Lab’s latest entry into the sofubi kaiju realm. Right out the box and out of the bag, the very first thing I noticed was Gigara’s teeth. Lenny - San gave fantastic definition to the teeth; very distinct, sharp and pronounced. Really makes me think of Muira Toys’ Pegyaos and Triceran when it comes to the teeth and tongue! There’s already been a whole stated about what influences we picked up on with Gigara, and getting it in hand only reinforces my personal aforementioned. This is a great kaiju toy, and I I’m very much in favor of its tree trunk, thunder thighs. There’s some nice, subtle layering to the paints on the body, namely around the back/back of the neck. It looks like some lighter blues weave in and out of the silver. The scaly tail beneath the wave - like shell on top was a nice detail to uncover. The new and improved foot stamp was rad to see, as well. Very pronounced and very detailed. I’m only slightly more in favor of Godesu to Gigara, only because of my bias for Gomora as my all time favorite, and Godesu’s loose resemblance. Even still, Gigara stands to be yet another instant classic birthed out of mind of Spectrum Labs. The newly designed bag is a welcome return to packaging form, and this also came with what looks like a coloring book? I haven’t the heart to open it, so perhaps someone can chime in with its contents! Given the three homage paints on Godesu we bared witness to, I’m very curious to see what paints will grace the soft vinyl body of Gigara next, and after! Spoiler
haha, same! I’ve lost like 6 times in a row for Spectrum Lab drops, wish I knew the secret! Maybe I’m doing it wrong
What a great toy! Since I saw it appears on my IG wall, it has become my new favorite toy I don't own. And thank you @xSuicide Squadx for the beautiful pictures and words. Helps me appreciate the toy even more (was so stuck on the perfect body texture and cool horns I missed the teeth).
@grosspustule @nico000 Thank you kindly, gentleman! These shots were pretty damn time consuming, but worth every second! @rattanicus I will have all flanges crossed for you on the next lotto! @Max Rodriguez I’m glad you picked up on that, too. I *kind* of thought that’s what he was goin’ for, since the ©Spectrum Lab stamp reflected Bullmark’s original marking before their logo foot stamp. Much like everything else Lenny - San does, it’s goddamn perfect.
Robert took such incredible photos of this beautiful creature so I'm taking the plunge and sharing shots of the fantastic coloring book that Lenny included with the Gigara debut! So much has been said about the merit and craft that goes into Lenny - San's work and this one is certainly no exception. Between the screen-printed plastic bag and coloring book, he's really hit the mark for me in respecting the classics and adding his own contemporary twist and personality to it while coming across as authentic. It's a real treat to see his translation from drawing into realized sculpt with this book. There's a bunch in here that would be a fantastic addition to the Spectrum Lab universe (Raygun toting Bunny anyone?). My fave of these might be the anatomical size comparison chart. Enjoy!
AHH!!! Thank you, @Kerk1!!! I still haven’t the heart to open mine, but this is very convincing that maybe I should! I think I’ll hold out and see if his next release comes with one! These would make fantastic standalone prints!
Got around to editing the green mini Godesu! A little more of the same to its red predecessor, which I also re - shot, but they’re fun as a pair. And they coincide nicely to their larger counterparts! Spoiler
I wish I even knew how to get the crisp detail you capture Rob, but I'll have to make do with my finicky phone focus and neighborhood scenery Peek that tail! The scaled texture on the end extends to the underside, like skin under an armoured shell. Maybe Gigara looks totally different underneath. I'd also draw attention to the depth of colour on show, with the classic blue 55 overlaid with a metallic ocean-blue, elevated by the silver coat immediately underneath. And tying it all up is the end of its back crest, which shows a hint of deep purple in direct light.
@zindabad Shit, you may call it finicky, but I call it charming and fun! I’m uber jealous you live in New York, too. You get some great cityscape shots that provide an awesome perspective of monsters in the city! That upwards shot of the belly is great, and a great way of showcasing that particular set of sculptural detail! The underside of scales is a nice, hidden gem that didn’t reveal itself until a detailed inspection! @rattanicus Here’s to hopin’ the next lotto leaves no one a desk thrashing panda!!!
Has anyone had a PayPal invoice through for the blue mini Godesu? the last email I got wasn’t too clear as to whether I need to just send payment over myself or if I’d get an invoice to pay and should wait.
